Alien Wire Replacement

I broke a wire on a my orange alien. I went to the wilderness exchange unlimited to get a new one and they told me that they do not make the larger sized aliens any more. I went home and found a post that said that since the wires are not load bearing use a paper clip or a safety pin.

I had to use a small paper clip as the others were too large to fit through the hole.

I did not take a before picture but here are a few after ones.

It took about 5 minutes and required wire cutters, and needle nose pliers. I also used regular pliers.

Steps.
1) Remove old wires
2) unfold paper clip
3) put paper clip through cam lobe hole
4) bend paper clip 90 degrees about 1/8 inch from end
5) put other end through hole on trigger
6) push cam lobe down to match other side and bend wire up over trigger
7) clip off paper clip leaving about 1/2 to 5/8 inch
8) wrap around wire twice (or close to twice)
9) make sure end of wire in pointing down to minimize catching on other stuff.

And with the trigger pulled.

Works in a pinch, nice job, but a bit messy, and the wire will not slide through the trigger bar hole.

These days, I solder a bead to the end of a stiff piece of wire (from a long straight pin), like these, but costs pennies rather than dollars per wire: fixehardware.com/shop/cch-a…

I don't remember who, but I got the idea from another MP member last year. Wish I could give proper credit,

If you have a smooth solid wire that can slip through the trigger bar hole, cam expansion side to side can self adjust over a wider range and work much better in offsets/flares.

You can also bend a small loop behind the trigger bar instead of wrapping around the bar. The wire needs to be strong and stiff enough. This is very stiff hardware "music" wire. acehardware.com/product/ind… I can buy this stuff locally by the 3' piece for a little over a buck. A bit hard to work with, but excellent results

Here's something to try to see if the issue 'hick raises is present: Pull the trigger back nearly all the way. Hold the pair of lobes with the repair closed with your fingers. Release trigger. Does the other pair of lobes return to fully open? If not, you have a problem.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
