Hire a guide for a day or two:

I have experience with Sierra Mountain guides (climbing, not skiing). That's why I recommended them.

If you mean free style or downhill I'd hire a guide. If you mean x-country then i'd go it alone. The main reason is that usually a guide for back country downhill/free style includes a drop at the top of a mountain.

sierra mountain guides are the way to go. you can rent equipment between them and places in mammoth (footloose maybe?). you can try different avy equipment through SMG i believe and if you like it, you can purchase some of the gear at a discounted rate. worth every penny. a great combination of classroom work and field work culminating in a day of guided BC skiing applying what you learned.

SMG has a BC day at June Mtn. maybe look into that.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
