Hello mountain dwellers:

I'm interested in what your opinion or experience is on mountain towns that offer good employment opportunities for nurse practitioners.

My wife will be the NP, with 'Family' as her specialty. We're potentially looking to move fall 2016. I will be working from home, so her employment is really the only requirement in our destination.

As far as what we're looking for: proximity to mountain activities, ideally 30 minutes or less with mountains aplenty. Our target locations (based on little research and maps) are Leavenworth Wa, Aspen Co, Bozeman Mt, Jackson hole WY, Estes park CO..., you get the picture. If there are locations that would be recommended, I'd love to hear about them.

You may want to look at Carbondale instead of Aspen unless you have a pretty darn good trust fund.

Doubtful Jackson will have much to offer, but worth looking into for sure. RN jobs there are competitive and hard to come by, and people tend to stay for years/entire careers when they get them. Granted, an NP has a different job market but I think that may be the way of healthcare there in general. Small population in a highly desirable place to live. I sure as heck hope to get back there some day.

Bozeman is worth a look too, but has a bunch of good programs feeding FNPs into it and is generally oversaturated with health care types from MDs on down.

Billings is worth looking at, though mostly for job opportunities. This is pretty much the state and regional healthcare hub. You'll be driving ~1hr to get to the mountains from here though. But when you get there, you won't find many people ;).

Signed,
-an RN who grew up in Jackson & lived in Bozeman for many years.

(edited to add: there's always SLC)

Thanks for all the info! We're still researching possibilities, but the sound of quiet Montana mountains sounds great.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
