What video editing software do you prefer? I'm looking to put together some climbing videos in the near future

I love Lightworks. It takes a little while to learn(in fact, for an hour or two you will feel like you can't do ANYTHING), but it's a real deal professional program and is crazy cheap for what you get. I think there's even a free version.

That looks complicated...I'm sure I can learn though, thanks for the quick response!

Adobe Premiere. If you're already an Adobe subscriber though it's not that expensive.

Premiere is good, fcpx is good if you have a mac. Although if you do, just use iMovie. The software honestly doesn't really matter, as long as it's not so tedious to use that you get frustrated and quit.

iMovie

try to get a hold of a copy of Final Cut Pro. iMovie will take over the project to the point where it's insulting. Final Cut Pro will do what you want!

Davinci 12 is free, and great. But not for beginners.

Windows Movie Maker, free and pretty straightforward.

Adobe Premiere Elements. It's a cheaper version of the full Premiere software, but has many of the same great features.

I'd put another vote out for Davinci Resolve. It's no more complicated to learn the basics than Premier (or really any non-linear editor), and it's free. Worst case, you don't like it and you move on to something paid afterwards.

Film and video post by trade here.

The free version of Resolve is fantastic. The features excluded from the Studio version are things most people will never need/touch/etc.
Additionally, it's one of the industry standards for color grading.

Additional tools to consider:

  • Avoid Media Composer First - good to learn if you're interested in editing professionally, but a little trickier to get the hang of for a beginner.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro - Costs money, but can be bundled with other Adobe applications, which are quite useful.
  • Vegas - Popular among the hobbiest editing crowd and YouTubers. Have not used, but can be purchased on sale frequently.
  • LightWorks - Not worth your time if you don't already know/love it.
  • Final Cut Pro X - Pros bitch about it, but it is nice to work in and use if you have a mac. Only issue is can be complicated to share files with collaborators in other software (for example, getting a mix done in ProTools requires 3rd party plug-in that is not free).
  • iMovie - Free on Mac, pretty solid little app actually. You can do most of what you want to do as a hobbyist in this. Worth considering if you own a Mac.
To sum it up, get Resolve. It's free. Learn it from https://mixinglight.com/course/davinci-resolve-14-tutorial-quickstart/ (this is a free full course).
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
