Probably a stupid question, but are there any issues with a Brit crossing into the USA with a rental car from Canada (Vancouver area). Or exiting the USA back this way?
I plan to climb in Washington State and Squamish. So could in theory fly into Vancouver or Seatle, and fly home from the other - assuming the rental car company will allow this. But I don't want to get stuck the wrong side of a border.
Actually a very good question. Allot depends on your rental car company. You better check with them to make sure you can take it cross border.
With that said, I would imagine that most car rental companies in BC or Washington would be OK with this. However I live in a border state on the east coast, had a colleague come for business who needed to go to Quebec and the rental car company policy was couldn't do it.
One way rentals are usually ridiculously expensive (pick up in one city, return to a different city).
Also, some states and most provinces probably require proof of insurance even with a rental car - so check to see if your UK insurance covers you while traveling and bring info that it does. Try avoiding getting car insurance from the car rental company.
