working south of las vegas for a month and was looking for suggestions for moderate (to 5.7 or so) solos in red rock that don't require a rope for descent. also of interest would be suggestions for canyons to scramble around in. I would imagine that some of the descent routes from the longer climbs could make for a fun few hours of adventuring themselves.
in addition, if any locals (or otherwise) were looking for partners and interested in showing a first timer around red rock on a weekend I would be psyched to rope up and do some longer climbs when not working.

hike up Windy Peak. You could also hike up the descent gully from Frogland. You could solo Solar Slab and do the walkoff.

The long walk-off is not necessary. You can downclimb the Black Orpheus or lower portion of the Chicken Lips descent, the latter is more mellow. There's beta for the former on the Solar Slab page. The Chicken Lips one is accessed by a gully higher from the BO raps.
Some other options
Cat in the Hat (5.6) to the summit (5.7), then do the Mescalito walk-off
Mt Wilson via Oak Creek (as of a few weeks ago there's a fixed line on the steep bit)
Out of Willow Springs do Lost Creek to the Hideout and on to N Peak (or just go up Lost Creek Canyon)
Branch Whitney has a bunch of canyon/peak scrambles (up to class 5) in his book and on his website.
