Gunks AAC campground update?

Ron Birk · · Boston, MA · Joined Sep 2009 · Points: 4,263

Looking at the calendar for the camp site it looks like there is space over memorial, but trying to book it says it's busy. Go figure.

I was at the Gunks last weekend and it least then, the MUA was still open. I miss camp slime though. I liked it. Mainly because of parking was so much easier.

We camped at the MUA yesterday night along with quite a few other people. Cannot comment on the longevity of the access though.

So have I. And I moved to Utah from CT 15 years ago. The Salt Lake Valley isn't anything like Happy Valley.

Austin spent plenty of time in Provo, at least 4 years .

Hey guys,

I heard a rumor (and then confirmed with a phone call to the front desk) that the Motel 87 (right off of the Thruway) is closing at the end of May. For a popular destination with already sparse accommodation options this really sucks. Does anyone know if a new owner is coming in to manage the hotel, or (hopefully) plans to demolish the old facility and build a larger one?

Thanks!

(didn't feel like this deserved it's own thread)

That would be a real bummer. I love that place when it's all of a sudden too cold to camp, if you stay there with four people it's cheaper than the hostel. Has a real David Lynch vibe.

Not sad to see it go, the couple times I've gone, the room may have been cheap but that's no excuse for it being dirty with mold in the bathroom.
In the same subject, after long legal fights a new motel is presently being built nearby.

Luc, are you talking about this?

I hope not - it's 20 mins North of exit 18, and looks like it will be expensive. Unfortunately, it would not replace the "cheap hotel" niche that Motel 87 filled for us.

Those links are for two different proposals. The first link is a hotel and waterpark. It states:
"Turk has proposed building the Wildberry Lodge on two parcels totaling 57 acres between the Thruway Exit 18 toll plaza and South Ohioville Road in New Paltz."

That location is immediately to the east of Exit 18, "not 20 minutes north"

Yup, you're right - two different projects. Here is the latest news that I could find on the waterpark/hotel:

Still doesn't seem like it's going to be as cheap as the Motel 87. It would be great if a larger budget hotel chain came in and just developed on the Motel 87 site.

I am planning on camping up at the new campsite in a few weeks with my 4 year old. Is that OK, to bring kids?? Or is this campground supposed to only be for climbers?

Camping is for all - the restrictions apply to type of camp
"shelter."

It is a tenting-oriented campground, and vehicle length is limited to a certain length. I have a Ford Econoline 150 and was told (before c/g opened) that it would "probably" squeak by in length, when the discussion of length lint was being made. So - many RV's are too long, and maybe even some of the bigger pickup trucks.

Awesome, thanks! We used to climb a bunch up there, but now we mainly hike and bike. Hoping to get back to climbing this summer and get our son into it, too!

That is beyond ludicrous. A Ford Econoline is simply not that long of a vehicle and many common and typical climbers' vehicles are longer.

It's of a length that is moving away from a "tent-camping" set up. I would say that there are actually very few climber vehicles which are much longer than that. A 4 door pickup is probably about that length.

Besides, if a person is bivying in their van, do they really WANT the campsite deal? They can come in and do a pay-for shower if desired. Is $24/38 worth it to have a picnic table?

Besides - if the RV-lengths ARE allowed, you can bet good money that RV-style campers would be booking the place solid well before most climbers are willing to put up the deposit.

Patty,

My daughter and I took a drive through the campground last Sat. to get a look at the layout and we talked with Paul Curran (the manager). He said that 90% of the people that weekend were family campers. So you won't be run off by the dirtbag climbers.

There's a google group for family climbing that's pretty active, with a few of the members having climbing kids the same age range as your youngster. If you'd like me to recommend you to the group just let me know and I'll help you get onto their mailing list.

1 FULLY AND WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE THAT THE RATES ARE TOO HIGH FOR THE NEW AAC CAMPSITE, ONLY ALLOWING 1 CAR PER SITE IS A MOVE MOTIVATED BY PURE, UNADULTERATED FILTHY GREED, THE MOHONKY PRESERVE IS SIMPLY BEING GREEDY, THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE CLOSED SLIME OR THE MOUNTAIN HOUSE, THERE NEEDS TO BE FAR MORE FREE CAMPING.

IN ADDITION, THERE NEEDS TO BE DESIGNATED AREAS WHERE IT IS LEGAL TO SLEEP IN YOUR CAR/VAN/WHATEVER!!! HOW CAN YOU SAY YOU LIVE IN A FREE COUNTRY WHEN YOUR COUNTRY MAKES IT ILLEGAL TO SLEEP.

JUST STOP, THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MOMENT. IT IS ILLEGAL TO SLEEP. They Have Made SLEEPING An Arrestable Offense! I DON'T CARE IF IT'S IN YOUR CAR OR ON THE STREET, IN A "FREE" COUNTRY IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO OUTLAW SLEEPING, NO MATTER WHERE IT IS, SO LONG AS YOU ARE ON PUBLIC PROPERTY AND NOT OPENLY DISTURBING OTHERS.

DISTURBING PEOPLE LIKE bigA(o) and NotSoHappyGrrrizzlyBear simply by enjoying your freedom to sleep in your car/van does not count as a legitimate disturbation of anyone. (yes, 1 make up words, 1'm free to do that and if you don't like it, then go start your own bolshevik gulag meetup!) You're dismayed at people eating out of their car? How absurd, perhaps you would like to starve me like Lizard Kagonabish did the Ukrainians! Good luck!! I'm well fed and 1 wouldn't mind losing a couple pounds anyway.

SO, WE LIVE IN AN EVER INCREASING NON-FREE SOCIETY, AND SOME PEOPLE WANT IT TO BE EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE WHO ARE NOT TRUST FUND BABIES!

HOWEVER, AND THIS IS MY MAIN REASON FOR POSTING.

IF, AND ONLY IF, THE GUNK MUA AREA REMAINS OPEN, AND IS NOT CLOSED DOWN BY MOHONKY SUPPORTERS LIKE bigA(O) AND Not$oHappyGRRRRZLY, THEN WE HAVE ACTUALLY MADE OUT IN ONE SENSE (MINUS THE CLOSURE OF SLIME) BECAUSE NOW YOU CAN CAMP FOR FREE AT MUA AND TAKE A SHOWER RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD AT THE AAC CAMPSITE EVEN IF YOU DON'T CAMP THERE.

OF COURSE THE NEXT QUESTION IS HOW MUCH TO TAKE A SHOWER FOR NON-MEMBERS, BECAUSE IF IT'S $38 DOLLARS... EVEN if $24 LOWER THAN $38 ($14) WE HAVE NOT MADE OUT THAT WELL AFTER ALL.

BUT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, WE HAVE WON A SINGULAR BATTLE AGAINST THE LIKES OF SETH, bigA(O) and NotSoHappyGrrrriizzzllly.

This post is dedicated to good clean fun-loving folks across the globe, and even a few of the dirtbag climbers (those who do not litter around the "MMUUUAAA" *in awkward Howard Dean screech voice* ) (not as worried about poop as long as it's far off in the woods off the paths since the rain will wash it away, and bears and raccoons poop all the time in the woods should we cause an uproar?) Some animals poop right on the paths.

^^^ That's a hell of a first post. Lots of YELLING, trust funds, lizards, grizzlies, greed and bolsheviks. And poop.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
