Hello,

We're visiting family near Yreka,Ca and staying seven days in mid-July. I've never been to that area. We will have a car and want to explore.
I'm looking for easy to moderates single or multi-pitch climbs up to 5.8+, and scrambles (3rd-4th class).
Any suggestions for climbing, hot springs, beautiful hikes and camping, or any cool things within 150-200 mile radius are much appreciated.

You can call in and talk to the 5th Season in Mt Shasta or the Basecamp. Castle Crags area has plenty of climbing check out Mt Hubris

Cosmic Wall on the Ogre (Mt. Hubris) is the area classic and probably the best 5.6 in California. Good info here for that, but for a good resource pickup Grover Shipman's guide from the Fifth Season.
Overall, not a ton of good moderates that far north. The better routes tend to start in the 5.10-5.11 range.
For cragging with no/little approach check out Ney Spring (5.10-5.12 single pitch trad), Cantara (~10 routes sport/trad/tr 5.6-11a).

Cragging with a 45min-2hr approaches can be found at Lover's Leap (near gazelle not the SLT one), Castle Crags and a couple other places.

Have fun exploring and make sure to get beta from the 5th and Shasta Base Camp.

Thank you for the great info.

Any good books/guides that cover that area?
Would 5th Season, or Basecamp have them?

both shops should have the Mt. Shasta area guide, but I'd recommend giving Shasta basecamp your biz.

definitely go do cosmic wall and the scramble up to castle dome. Six toe rock has a great 5.8. these climbs are on the site with plenty of beta if you don't want to pony up for the guidebook.

some hiking recommendations - black butte, castle lake area, bunny flat to sierra club hut on mt. Shasta, glass mountain NE of Shasta, strawberry mountain (if I remember right) out of happy camp which is west of Yreka on the Klamath River.

There is an ugly smelly hotspring south out of happy camp too, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
