Living in Cañon City?

Hey guys,
I might be relocating from Salt Lake City to Cañon City Colorado for a job. I'm aware it's close to Shelf Road, which is great, but what's living in the town like? I'm a mid 20's liberal atheist single male.

Have you every been? The city seems pretty shitty to me… Only been a few times, but I'd live there if I needed too, and there is plenty of fun outdoors stuff to do around there. If you like to keep to yourself mostly and don't need the comforts of bigger cities then I bet you would like it alright.

You're joking, right?

These are kind of the responses I was assuming but dreading...

I just got home from a short weekend at Shelf. Was commenting to my partner that I was wondering what it would be like to live there. She of course looked at me like I'm crazy...

Consider commuting from Colorado Springs like my friend does. She works in Canon City. The Springs is infinitely more tolerable and even kind of quaint in ways it will take many years to appreciate.

Tyler, I can however introduce you to the one cute, 20-something girl that climbs that lives in Canon City. You could at least hang out with her.

It depends on what interests you, but it is definitely a small town compared to SLC.

Good things:
-Easy access to Sangre de Cristo Range, Sawatch Range, and Pike National Forest
-Lots of rafting opportunities
-Royal Gorge
-Climbing nearby on Shelf Road
-Roads good for mountain biking

Bad things:
-Kind of a strange town with a lot of prisons
-Hot in the summer
-Not much to do other than the outdoor stuff

Let's not forget the Fu-King Chinese palace. I think Stitch nailed it. I hate commuting but sometimes it's worth it.

I always say you can do anything for a year...its not like you are moving to Kansas with nothing to do...there is a ton of biking and climbing right out your door...And Monarch mountain isnt too far of a drive (and not on I70). I would vote there are worse places to live!

I would say go for it. SLC is nice, I lived there for 5 yrs plus a couple of winters but Canon City would be a nice change of pace. If the job is decent and will allow you opportunity to enjoy the surrounding area then try it for 1-2 yrs. I had a buddy in SLC that took a temporary gig in Valdez just for the experience and stayed 4 yrs because he loved the change.

I don't think Canon is that bad. If you were going to commute, live up stream (salida or somewhere thereabouts) as opposed to the front range. If you can handle the horrid double frontage highway situation then it is bearable. One huge benefit to Canon is the cheap cost of real estate. Winter would be fine but it's a bit warm for my North Atlantic blood down there in summer. My two cents.

Good man.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I've got several months to sort it out, just wanted some initial opinions from the climbing community.
