Hey all, just moved to Cali for a park service job in Sequoia NP. I'm coming from the Black Hills of South Dakota and am going through climbing withdraws. I am having problems finding climbers to go up to Yosemite with me and was wondering if anyone would be so kind to take in a new climbing buddy. I'll never forgive myself if I don't touch any crag while I'm here. Since I'm a park service employee, there is a good chance I can get some employee perks too. Have gear, sport & trad pro knowledge and can lead. Please please I love to talk to anyone willing. 605-481-8902

Thanks,

Danny

If you are in Sequoia no real need to go up to Yosemite. Plenty of climbing there and it's much less crowded. Kings Canyon is like a 2/3 scale Yosemite Valley. I've only been to SEKI a few times, but I've heard the rangers station in Kings Canyon is a place to find info on routes and probably find a partner.

You should go to Yosemite just to see it of course, and if so the Camp 4 bulletin board is the place to find partners.

I was just up at Hospital Rock scouting a wall, looks pretty fun and mellow although the approach is a bit of a mess. I'm in Visalia so I've been trying to find places in Sequoia (there is awesome climbing and there is virtually no one climbing there) if you're interested let me know. I'm a bit of a climbing novice but I can make my way up the rock, and I promise not to kill you :)

TONS of climbing in SEKI. Like, a lifetime's worth.

And I bet you can find a partner(s) among your fellow NPS staffers.

Also, natives don't usually call it "Cali." ;-)

Come to Danland tomorrow! We're having a little local climber get together for anyone who's interested. There are definitely other climbers on the SEKI staff and you may be able to meet a couple. I plan on being up there around 830ish with a couple other guys.

There is a chance of afternoon showers but we're gonna head up anyway and play it by ear. It's on the mineral king road and more info can be found on the little website I started a few months ago.

I think I understand where you are in terms of wanting to leave the potential of where you already are to travel to the capital of climbing. I came to Sicily, and discovered the massive amount of climbing, right here on the island. I discovered the climbing in Southern Italy (the mainland), got a guidebook, and flew up there to check out the crags on a weekend. Out of the 3 or 4 crags I visited, I never saw a soul! I was totally bummed. I traveled to Italy from home in Sicily, on one occasion I had something organized with another climber whom was in the area, but it fell through. On another occasion, I went to a climbing festival that turned out to be a bunch of climbers hanging out in an Italian bar on a Saturday evening, watching a video of some old veteran climbers, using a teleprompter and a white bed sheet. Since then, I've decided to focus on the climbing right here at home! I won't travel for climbing, again, until I've planned well in advance, and my gut feels right! I feel ya, dude! If you don't have a partner lined up, it can turn out to suck! However, if you can appreciate the journey in between home and the destination, and enjoy the scenery in an unfamiliar place and appreciate the relaxation of being away from boring old home and work, then, why not?? Get it outta the way, so you can free up that urge, and it'll be easier for you to appreciate the climbing at home!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
