Too wet to climb in Moab?
|
Hoping to do some climbing in Castle Valley this weekend, but I've heard that the rock hasn't really had a chance to dry out from all the rain we've been having. Anyone know if that's true? I'm not about to go climb on wet sandstone. Anyone in the area wanna chime in? Dry enough to climb or no? |

Oh man, another climbing on wet sandstone thread. Set your computer down and curl up into a ball in the corner. DO IT NOW! |

I'm not trying to start a debate. I specifically stated that I'm not gonna go climb on wet sandstone. Just wondering if someone in the area can let me know if it's dry or not :) All the rain we've been having is nuts. |

This thread is probably better posted in the Zion/Moab local thread instead of here. NOAA has it looking like it's going to rain again this weekend so I'd say don't go and enjoy your memorial day doing something else. |

Looking at the forecast and the climate summary, I would think most is dry now, lots of rain still in the forecast. This weekend dose not look good. |

Lots of rain last week. Plenty of people climbing in Moab last weekend (drove by Wall Street and it was packed), which was probably not the best situation as it had rained quite hard at times and the ground was still wet. The sandstone in the Moab area is really soft, tread lightly and don't be that guy who breaks holds on classic routes, wears the bolt holes on anchors (top roping) due to soft wet rock, or rips all their gear and gets hurt because the crack is wet and cams don't like to stay in the rock when the sandstone is wet. |

When I was in Moab last month it rained, so I posted the same question and drove into town and talked to some folks in the climbing gear stores. The consensus was you let 2 days of full sunshine dry the rock out before you challenge the gear in sandstone. |

Moab is good to go. |
