9.8mm too thin for a first rope?

Before buying this rope I did a lot of thinking, I really wanted something a little lighter for climbs with a longer approach. Now that I have done some more reading I am worried that this rope may be bit too thin and that I may wear it out to quickly. The rope is an edelweiss curve (I got a pro deal on the rope, which may have influenced my choice).

Cheers
Justin

Just be careful with it and it'll last "long enough". It's almost 10mm and 10 is the new 11, after all.

haha that's true. First rope was a 10.5 and that was beastly looking back. My thickest now is PMI 10.2 and I use that mostly for TR rock and ice. After that it's 9.8.

But what are you going to do with it? Gangbang top rope? Sport? Trad? I'd say anywhere between 9.8-10 should give you tons of great service at a decent weight.

My first rope was a 9.8. I never really TRed with it but it held up very well to 150+ days a year of multi-pitch trad for a few good years. Especially if you got a good deal, go for it, and just check it regularly and retire it when you need to. Any rope could last you a few years, or could take a core shot on your first day out. But there's no reason to think a 9.8 is inherently not going to be sufficiently durable.

Sounds like it will be fine. Thanks. I'll be using it for trad and TR mostly.

I used my first 9.8 rope for years, trad and TR. Eventually it got downgraded to TR only, and now I cut it in half for a gym rope. One side is retired. I don't see the need for a thicker rope unless it's for TR only for many many laps (ie a class). Just check it regularly, and know that eventually you'll need a new one.

Current rope is 9.8 and works well for everything.

I'd take 9.8 odds out of 10 any day.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
