This is safe, right?

Ok - I understand ... we have different views about whether centeredness matters regarding the designed cam angle.

Late this evening, I'll post up some details.

Some of you might want to do a little studying up on cams and how they work.

Or maybe not.

If the guy hasn't died yet or the piece hasn't popped out and I guess it's safe. I'd use it vs not having anything.

This one hits the nail on the head.

Alright - I'll concede the cam angle is not affected. Putting pencil to paper helped clarify that. Thanks for pressing the point with me.

No problem. Your certainty had me start questioning myself. :-)

Aside from the discussion of angles and shit, it doesn't matter. The trigger wire has no effect on anything when cammed. The cam will compress to center. The side with the replaced trigger wire will have one wire slack and the other in tension. The trigger wire has one purpose, to compress the cam for removal.

The caveat here is that the cam must be compressed past the point where the improvised trigger wire is interfering with the expansion of the cam.In order for a cam to work, the cam has to be able to exert an outward force when pulled in a downward direction. If the trigger wire is interfering with the cam's ability to expand, it is working against that expansion and the outward force. How much is an entirely different question. It might be that the outward force is sufficient to overcome the interference from the hairpin. Then again, it might not.

So yes, a trigger really has one purpose; placement/removal. But I can see that a shoddy trigger wire (ie one that interferes with the cam's primary function to exert an outward force)could potentially be less safe.

One other thing that concerns me about the patch ...

Assuming the crack is narrow enough to avoid the short "trigger wire" preventing lobe expansion, could the axle-end of one pair of lobes remain off-center after the trigger is released, while the axle-end of the other pair is centered. If the axle-end a-symmetry is a real possibility, could falling on that introduce unexpected stresses?

What? And stop the senseless slaughtering of 1's and 0's that this thread has become?

I think I got one more blow to deliver. But it's gonna take stepping away from the keyboard and getting out on the rock to know for sure. :-)

A much later edit: experimented a little - can't make the case I thought I might. I'll slink back into the background ...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
