Can anyone tell me about the current conditions for the climbing on Elephants Perch as well as the approach? We are thinking about making a detour on our road trip up to Idaho but weren't too sure if we were jumping the gun for the alpine season? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Jess

I don't have first hand knowledge, but this would be much earlier than usual if it was even close to open. I don't even think the shuttle is running yet. Stanley and the area are friggin cold places. Even if there wasn't snow on the approach, the river crossing will be pretty substantial. June 1 or later is typically better. I've been there in mid June with lots of snow on the approach, and lots of snow on the summit.

You might hear better, but I wouldn't get your hopes up...yer gonna die

I don't think the ferry is operational yet, but his year's snow pack has been terrible. I think the current storm cycle that's pounding the Rockies will add some, but you might be ok. Truthfully, the possible absence of the ferry is the larger problem to consider.

Yep a little too early for sure.http://www.network54.com/Forum/105717/thread/1431658097/Sawtooth+area+lakes+conditions.
If you do wander back in there, do us all a favor and post a report.

Redfish Lodge starts operating for the season Memorial Day - this weekend, so you will be able to use their boat shuttle across the 5-mile Redfish Lake.
The creek crossing to the Perch can be an issue, but in my experience, there is always a way across. The rope line just up from the slabs campsite is probably still fixed.

Weather is terrible right now, however, and is expected to be thru the extended forecast.

The Redfish dock was destroyed by ice this winter. It is being rebuilt currently and you can follow the progress on their Facebook page here ( facebook.com/RedfishLakeLod…). I am not sure if the ferry is running yet or not.
