Needles -- climbing in the sun

I have tentative plans to hit up the needles this weekend. However, judging from the weather, it looks like it's going to be balls cold.

Anyone know of any climbs in the sun most of the day. Specifically, I am looking for 5.9 climbs or well protected 5.10 climbs.

Thanks!

Matt,

Most of the times I have been there the wind has been blowing pretty good even if there is no storm in the vicinity. You might like Spooky. I recall it being in the sun but very windy.

White punks is southish facing so that may be warmer but easier (8+/9-).
Imaginary Voyage get sun most of the day. (9-)
Love potion #9 is also south facing and gets alot of sun. (9+)

Igor/Airy sun in AM. EDIT<-- i am wrong it is afternoon sun

While not in the needles, Dome rock is good for cold days as it is also south facing.

It'll be cold no matter where, forecast highs in the upper '40s and "breezy" (which means super windy for most spots at the Needles). Cold and windy is the norm there, so this weekend you'll be frozen unless you're from Alaska.

If you're looking for warmth, go to J Tree, highs there mid-60s. Save the Needles for when you'll enjoy it!

Chad, great recommendation. Dome Rock is a bit warmer during these forecasts. Minimal approach and fun lines still make for a great day!

Good recs from Chad and Richard, as well as for Dome Rock. Anti-jello Crack is worth the drive all by itself. You may want to pick a different weekend though. Here's a link to the webcams up on nearby Mt. Jordan. Looking pretty wet and cold up there: rockyags.cr.usgs.gov/dashbo…

63 and sunny.I can handle that.
52 in the shade with potential for rain, that's just too much for me.

matt c .... you believe the weather report?

A alaska storm is blowing through right now through FRIDAY... My experience is that these storms sometimes produce hi-winds and unstable conditions for a day or two after the storm.

But I know nothing....

Have fun

I too, had a needles trip planned from the 20th - 29th. I really, really want to climb at the needles but the weather sounds like a no go. Same for dome rock I'm assuming? Maybe I should just go to bishop or something? drat it all! I wanted to go to the needles! Stupid weather.

Royal, Matt .... Im going to the Church Domes this weekend....

If the Needles Road is open... go there. Last weekend was not a good one for T&S cause Alaskan storms make it blow for a few days after.... thats why Josh was invented.

But bring the rain gear, from my experience you can get freezing Ice storms on Memorial Day weekend at the Needles. Two years ago, it was about 30 F in Kernville on Friday, but by Sat it was 70 up on the Kern Plateau. Things change in a hurry.

Happy climbing

I'm guessing that the road will be open by this weekend, but anyone know for sure?

The road is open. I called last week.
