Nearest Multipitch Area to Minneapolis?

Hey all,

I'm beginning to expand my area of climbing and was wondering if anyone had good recommendations on where I could go to find the nearest decent multi-pitch crags to the twin cities. When I say nearest I mean within 8-12 hours. I went to Red Rock Canyon and did my first 2 and 3 multi-pitches there and became hooked! Any help would be great!

Happy climbing!

Black Hills.. Rushmore area has some pretty good multi-pitch.
Thunder Bay.. Ontario area has some multi-pitch climbing in very scenic surroundings.

Agree with Burt - Rushmore and the Needles are only about 9 hours from the cities and there are a ton of routes there. Nothing super tall but you can find enough in the 200-400' range to keep you busy for a few days. Classics off the top of my head:

Garfield Goes to Washington - Rushmore
Conn Diagonal - Needles
Cathedral Spires - Needles

Generally it's a cool place to check out if you've never been, and reaching some of those tiny summits and then simul-rapping off is definitely an experience.

Good times, pretty places. Have fun out there!

The needles are great. Totally feasible with a 3 day weekend.

On the other hand, Palisade head is 3.5 hrs away and has several 2-3 pitch routes. Not HUGE multi-pitch by any means, but wonderful climbing.

Palisade Head, definitely. Also Shovel Point, its lower angle, slightly friendlier twin. Not multi-pitch, but quite a bit of very high quality terrain.

As long as you're at or near the north shore, look into Section 13, Carlton Peak, Wolf Ridge ELC. Great stuff.

Not sure if it's within your 8-12 hour range, but there's always Devils Tower for serious multi-pitch adventures. Be sure to take two ropes for the forever rappels, and don't go in June, 'cause it's closed to climbing then.

Climb safe and have fun!

I wouldnt consider Devils Tower close but it's just a little further than the needles and it's within your parameters at 10 hours....Crack heaven.

Also there's supposedly multi pitch stuff up by thunder bay, but nots much info out there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
