i lost something called an Assi. i believe i dropped it at the MUA. it is kinda like a combination between a sickle and machete. it is about a foot long, curved, and made of solid steel. it weighs about 10lbs, and has white tape on the handle. this is something i brought back from nepal, and is an invaluable tool on the farm, not to mention having some sentimental value. i've searched the internet far and wide, and cannot even find a photo, let alone where to purchase a new one. it only cost a few bucks, but as far as i can tell is irreplaceable without going back to this particular region of nepal. i am willing to pay a reward if found. thanks, -Eric

Hi Chris, thanks, but no, its an assi that i lost. it has more curvature than a kukhuri, and is MUCH more useful. kukhuris are more ubiquitous and better known, and therefore availble all over the internet. assi's are particular to the Gurung people i lived with. kukhuris are primarily weapons, that have some ancillary uses (chopping wood and clearing trail, mostly), whereas assi's are primarily farm tools (that could be used as a weapon, if necessary). you couldn't, for example, use a kukhuri to harvest wheat, till soil, dig out roots, or (my current task) clear a field of thorns nearly so well. its actually even better than the kukhuri at clearing forest and chopping wood, as well (though i may be biased, having lived and worked with assi-users). the assi is an insanely useful tool, once you learn how to use it; hence my desperation at having lost it. it's really more like a heavy sickle, rather than a curved machete.

thanks Cornelius. yes, more similar to this than a kukhuri, but significantly heavier. probably 5 times the weight. i couldnt imagine chopping wood or clearing forest with one of these. the beauty of the assi is that its can funciton as a sickle when you want to do precision harvesting, and as a kukhuri when you want to do mass destruction... the closest thing i've found is this. machetespecialists.com/imac…

How exactly does one go about losing 10 lbs of Assi? Is it difficult to get a 10 lb Assi In tight jeans through customs? If a 10 lb Assi lost a little weight would it be Assi-nine? Just curious...

Glad you got your ass back. But for the life of me I cannot fathom why one would need one of these at the MUA, or camping anywhere else for that matter.

One needs a *tool* like that at the MUA when they go to...politely....remind people that quiet time is 10pm, when they are still up and at it at 2 in the morning.

definitely the drum circle answer. damn dirtbag climber hippies... the truthful (boring) answer is that it just happened to be in my car, and i took it out while reorganizing. i do use it to chop wood, but not in this case. and, in cochamo, where the cracks are all filled in with vegetation, i actually used it as a climbing tool; both to scrape out the cracks to make room for pro, and sometimes in the same manner as an ice tool, lol... will post a photo soon for those interested. and, for anyone headed to pokhara (prob not in the near future...), bring me more!! =)
