Sharp End and local author Karl Kelley are coming out with a new guidebook for the Moab area called High on Moab. Pre-orders get a $5 discount and an E-book. See the Sharp End website for details.

I am on the fence with this purchase. Do any of you have more information? Is this a comprehensive guide? High quality? In color? I have most of what is in print for the Moab area - my primary interest in this book is if there is better information and perhaps additional worthwhile climbs not in other books (the website says new stuff is included).

If any of you have insight, or if I can get input from Karl and or Sharp End, that would be appreciated.

Thanks! and climb ohn. Wally

There will never be a comprehensive guide of the Moab area.

Hello Wally,
Karl here. Of course I will tell you to buy "High on Moab" and I will give you a few reasons why.
Do you climb here often? If so you will be excited to know that there is a fair amount of "new routes" listed in this guide for you to check out! Also by buying this book you will be helping support the access to the many climbing areas as 100% of my royalties are being given to the Access Fund.
No, it is not a comprehensive guide, that would be something though. I suspect most would have to hire a sherpa to carry a comprehensive book to the crag (meaning it would be a heavy book)! Though the book is a "select" guide, most things you might consider a crag (Wall st., Ice Cream Parlor, Abraxas wall, Dog wall etc…) are comprehensive. Then there are oodles of select routes 3 star and up listed. All in all there is around 850 routes listed with nearly half of them previously unpublished. Some highlights besides new routes would have to be hand drawn topo's of Castle Valley and Big Bend Butte from Jay Smith as well as a revised Big Bend Bouldering section from long time local Lisa Hathaway. Thankfully I have had tons of help from all sorts of people whom live here or spent loads of time here climbing and developing the Moab climbing.
I am not sure of your definition of "high quality" so I dare not reply.
Yes, it is in color.
I hope this adequately answered your questions and you decide our book is worthy to throw in your pack!!

Hey Karl - thanks for your reply. Yeah, I have been climbing in the Moab area for 15+ years - and am starting to run out of doable routes (for me) in the Moab area.

Your guidebook sounds interesting - okay - I am sold. Very generous of you to donate proceeds to the Access Fund - it would be okay to take a profit for your efforts . . . Of course your decision.

This guidebook is awesome!! Go buy it!! Great quality book n paper... sweet color photos...lots of new climbs...great , but not too much, beta on each route ( length, exposure, basic gear) , not supertopo, but thats not all bad. Similar in scope and quality as the Indian Creek by Bloom. Brief and nice history of the area.. ethics.. environmental responsibility, etc... five stars !!.... yes high quality

cheers.. lou
