Buying a 2015 pickup, suggestions?

+1 for the ram. I drove everything and kept coming back to the quality and design of the rams interior. Miles away from everybody elses solutions. Tried to find one with the new v6 as I thought it was more than adequate power wise. Never could find one with the options I wanted but ended up picking up a certified used 2014 with the v8 and a cap for better money. V8 gets 19-23 on the interstate/highway and 16-18 in town. Only out a few hundred bucks total cost of ownership with the savings and the slightly poorer gas mileage.

It is seriously effortless to drive, quiet like a car, really just a giant rolling couch.

The only other contender was the colorado but I could not deal with my knees in my chin, my celica had taller seats.

If the Colorado is in the mix, you should also keep an eye open for an available GMC Canyon. The vehicles are essentially identical.

The 5 cylinder, 3.7 liter with the off road package might be good for what you are looking for (don't think they are calling it the Z71 anymore).

wait for the 4cyl diesel colorado out in 2016.

Outta all the American new trucks on the market it looks like Chevy trucks have the least problems. Lots of dealerships finance aftermarket lifts wheels and such.. If you're into paying interest in that kinda stuff.

The Subarus I've driven have worked well for climbing and biking trips. I would check those or a Jeep out if you decide you don't want a camper.

I'm with the anti Tacoma crowd but I'm a redneck that tows and hauls.

The only negative with the Colorado is that the ground clearance is the worst of any 4x4 truck I've ever seen. The diesel one looks cool though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Nissan Frontier. the pro-4x package has bilstien shocks, locking rear diff, hill decent assist, bigger tires, powerful v6, Skid plates etc. perfect for what your needs are, plus some. Put a little lift on it with big tires and you'd be pretty capable. I'm at 80,000 miles with zero problems (knock on wood). Make sure to get the full size bed if you wanna rock a topper.

Big fan of my 2011 Nissan Frontier pro 4x, essentially a taco trd but cost a damn site less because it doesn't say toyota on it.

Not sure why I hadn't looked at the Nissan, especially considering how much I liked a previous Xterra I owned. I'll have to check that out.

on the previous generation colorado, i agree with you. the transmission cross member is extremely low. the new ones are a different story.

+1 for the Taco, but I have one so I'm obviously biased. It's a 2013 TRD Sport 4x4 V6.

Plenty of awesome things to talk about, so I'll just list the only downsides I can think of after having my '13 for 2.5 years:

- Cab & bed choices. I chose the double cab short bed (5') with plans to sleep in the back, but I'm 5'9" so I fit pretty well back there. I like having 5 real seats for long trips. The rear seats in the access cab long bed (6') are not the most comfortable, you'll need to see for yourself. If you're gonna go double cab long bed, just get a full-sized truck.
- Finicky rear end at times. Had some rear diff noise going on. Ended up lifting the truck and therefore changing driveline angles which solved the problem.
- Front diff vibrations. If you lift your truck, expect this. Can be solved with a $60 part. My truck now rides smooth as butter.
- $$$$ Price

That's all I can think of.

I do lots of mountain driving, snow driving, trips where the truck is fully crammed with gear. Sleep in the back, haul bikes & skis around. It's my daily driver but I make occasional offroad trips. If I could go back in time I wouldn't change a thing.

Paid ~$27k for my TRD Sport new, but the dealer was originally asking ~$30k

And it's actually just Sand Flats, not Gooseberry

Toyota Tacoma doesn't ride very well that's for sure.

Yeah all Toyotas are girls. The older ones off road way better. In fact the new ones kinda suck. Oh and they are ugly

Thanks for the info Daniel Gloven. That's the kind of detail I was looking for. I'm only 6', but I can't see cramming into a 5 foot bed to sleep regularly. Good to know on the price too. They're asking about 30 for the 2015's as well.

Cheers

Haters gonna hate. Me and thousands of other climbers have been completely satisfied with Tacomas.

Mind if I ask how much you paid?

Low 30s w/ shell.

About the least truck you can get for the money. Climber's like Subarus too. Just shows that climbers know nothing when it comes to vehicles. Look how many times a week the same "what kind of car/truck should I buy" thread pops up.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
