Camp Bird Road?

Does anyone down in the Ouray area know when they open up the winter gate on Camp Bird Road?

I'm hoping to go ski the Snake Couloir and am curious how far up the road you could drive right now.

Thanks!

May 1st was opening day according the sign on the gate. Have not been up there for a couple weeks, so can not confirm.

Post up if you hit the Snake Couloir. I was looking at doing this soon, and would love to know what its like! Thanks!

Should be able to drive all the way to the Governor Basin cutoff.
I too would delight in a snow conditions report of the south and north faces, please...

Stiles,

Posting the above info on an online forum is not cool. Please delete!

Some folks were looking for a follow-up on this, so here it is:

Attempted the Snake Couloir on Sunday, but weather conditions were awful. High winds, zero visibility, and A LOT of fresh snow meant that we bailed before even beginning our ascent of Sneffels.

We salvaged the trip by skiing the North Couloir on Mt. Gilpin, but it was rather sketch. All the new snow began to form a shallow wind/storm slab that proved rather reactive. We kicked off several small loose dry slides, but nothing big enough to bury you. I'd wait for this latest storm snow to settle before getting after anything big in the San Juans.

Just my two cents! Otherwise, we were able to drive all the way up Camp Bird Road to the summer trailhead in Yankee Boy Basin, and the powder skiing was EPIC.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
