No I am not going to laugh cause you have little idea about being poor so do not play that card. Like others I am going to say suck it up. It is all about priorities. Sounds like you would rather spend your money elsewhere.

The going rate the is $63 and some change per month … if it seems like too much then go to Pete's Rock or LLC boulders. If folks want to guest you in with their passes that is cool too. Otherwise man up and go ask to scrub holds in exchange for a pass.

There is nothing more pathetic than a 5.8 top rope hero who lives in a cubicle, wasting his bosses money and time, projecting on to a young and psyched climber.

You are a pathetic climbers and persons.

Good on you kid, where there is a will there is a way.

Climbing was not built on the backs of these conservative assholes, they just arrived at the party as of late, but are pretending they have been here all along; they are liars!

Be a good climber and find the scam!!!

That is a ridiculously expensive gym. Find another gym and/or find someone to go climb up in the canyons now that the weather is good.

If this didn't describe me so accurately, I would be insulted.

If all the folks whining in this thread put their energy into commenting on the Mountain Accord, we could stop ski area expansion, tunnels and trains in the Wasatch!

The weather for climbing has been good all winter there, besides that, any world class gym is worth that price. I'd pay 75 bucks for momentum over 30-40 for some armpit of a gym any day. Ask those NYC folk what they pay!

I never complained about that, its a deal if you go, which I don't anymore. I don't like driving enough to do it.

Maybe the kid lives within a bike ride of the gym, maybe he is a natural born plastic puller?

Interesting that you took it this way...I was describing myself as a working stiff cubicle monkey.

So after actually reading through most of the nonsense in this thread, I didn't see any recommend ways to get into the " employee at the climbing gym" scene.

Basically, since you've been going there a bunch, you should (hopefully) know most of the current employees and mangers. If you don't know them, get to be very friendly and suck up paying for a few months pass. Arrive when the setters are putting up routes, or stay after hours and help them clean up. Hinting to them along the way that you want to work there. But be specific, being a desk jockey sucks. You really want the job of a route setter. Not only do you get paid to be creative, but you get paid to train and climb hard. That's the key, get paid doing what you want to do. Also, you can spend most of that money on your sweet ProDeals.

This worked for me and 3 of my friends over the last 5 years, I don't see why it wouldn't work for you! Best of luck man. My best days were hanging around setting in the gym and learning how to climb hard.

Cheers,
Mac

Ask if they have "punch passes". It's usually set up as a card worth 10 visits for $100 or something around that price, many gyms do it.

That way you get a break on day-pass rate, but aren't committed to $400 or feeling like you have to go climbing to get your money's worth back out of it.

I watched Valley Uprising too. It was on the Discovery Channel Saturday night. Notice the clean cut kid at the end of the movie. You know present day not 1980.

I can't believe you used the same ideas as Elena to insult people. I thought you guys didn't get along with her?

Ok I'm going to go back to my cube and try not to waste my boss's money today.

I only checked the first page, so forgive me if someone has already said this, but Route Setters typically get free membership in addition to any other perks in exchange for meeting a route quota.

Alec Whitney wrote:I have been climbing at the Momentum gyms on the Wasatch front off and on for about a year now, and because my friend has a hook up, it has always been for free. I now want to get more serious, and become a better climber, but my friend who can get me into momentum for free just plays baseball and hangs out like high schoolers do. I need to go to the gym more often, but because I have never paid before, I am having a hard time forking up $17 for a day entry, or $400 for a 6 month pass. I recognize the ridiculousness of this question, and I know the obvious answer, but I want to hear if anyone has an idea for me to get a discount, or find a way to "cheat the system." I have too many hobbies that could use a $400 investment for me to just buy the membership without at least posting a ridiculous thread... I hope you guys can laugh at a poor high school kid, and maybe suggest some crazy ideas for me to save some dough and avoid paying high dollar for a gym membership.

Sorry that you were offended at the comment, I guess you are that person.

Move in to a truck, now that's the dream.

No one is labelling it stealing. That is simply what it is. You can polish a turd and call it whatever you want but at the end of the day its still a turd. If you call it something else, the only one you are fooling is yourself...

No way I'm cool! I enjoy your comments.

I'm not even close to that person. I just play a conservative asshole on Mountain Project.

Al's van looked like a great place to live. You sound like my wife. She got to peep through a MB sprinter a climber owned. Now she wants one.. Not a fifth wheel camper not a motorhome.. The most expensive option, a sprinter! I don't see where driving a sprinter around qualifies as dirtbagging.

The solution to expensive indoor gyms is to just avoid the places.

What's a "lad gym?"

You may need to find a different hobby if you can't stomach $400 for a 6 month gym membership. If you "want to get more serious and become a better climber" it's gonna cost you A LOT more money than that. And you should say goodbye to any dreamy visions you might have had about climbing trad one day.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
