Hi, I'm thinking of heading to Lover's Leap in 2 days (from Vancouver) on the way to Yosemite. How are conditions at the Leap at the moment?

Much appreciated.

Everything should be dry. On the rare chance there is ice on the descent it would be minimal at most. It has been fairly cool at night and the rock gets afternoon. Haven't had a chance to climb yet this season so I'm not sure if the snakes are out yet or not.

I've been twice in the past 2 months and haven't seen any snakes.

I'm new to the area, what breed of snakes are lurking around?

Rattlesnakes. We saw 5 in a day last May. One was smashed with a rock. If you do happen to see one, appreciate it from afar and leave it be. Absolutely no need to harm/kill a snake.

There's the occasional Rubber Boa, but mostly rattlers like Gargano said. I'm convinced it's a breeding ground, I have never ran in to as many snakes in one day in the Tahoe area as at the Leap. I've shared a belay ledge (east wall I think) with a small-medium sized snake (it had the coloring of a rattlesnake and not a rubber boa, never heard any rattling though) and was not super thrilled. Thankfully it wasn't being territorial.

Almost stepped on a rattler two weekends ago. So they are out!

Conditions are good now, but this weekend looks like possiblity of thunderstorms.
As far as rattlers go, YES it is a breeding ground because the rodents are eating the climbers food and breeding, making more food for the snakes.
East wall and Hogsback seem to be the worst, with a baby last year 100 ft up on Wallbangers center, in the crack next to the old pin at the first belay ledge.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
