Long story short..a few of my far more experienced climbing partners are going out to El Capitan to do some big walling and i'm tagging along and doing some climbing at the local smaller crags. Anyone have any suggestions on "Need to climb" trad, single pitch routes to climb while i'm in the valley?

Andrew,

Get this book. Use the star ayatem to pick "must do" climbs. Plenty of single-pitch stuff in there.

Your profile says you lead to 5.8 so I'll suggest these....
The Grack Center
After Six
After Seven
Church Bowl Lieback
Bishops Terrace

For beginner single pitch, you can check out Pine Line at the base of El Cap while you send your buddies off.

The first pitch of Jamcrack might be a good one as well. The Five Open Books area has some classic, beginner routes too when you're ready for multi-pitch.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
