Off widths in MN or WI
|
I am looking to try my hand at off-width climbing. I am in the twin cities, are there any good off widths in Minnesota or Western Wisconsin that could possibly be TRed (I don't have gear big enough or any experience on wide cracks yet, so TR would be nice)? |
|
Taylor's Falls has some nice hand crack and a few off width ( The Real Thing) all TR. Palisade Head on the Northshore but may be too wet after the snow they just got. |

Fun easy route. |

Also awesome |

It's a chimney with some off width: |

If you make it to devil's lake there are some nice off width tr cracks. |

At DL: Impossible Crack, Bastard Chimney, and Via Apia (upper section is OW). American Beauty Crack has an off-hands crux section that's pretty good too. These should all make for good introductions to OW climbing. |

Looks like I gotta get over to DL soon! |
|
Try Thrombus and Impossible Crack on the WI side at Taylors. |

excellent |

There's Goliath's Finger Crack at the Northshore in Minnesota. It can be easily top-roped. |
|
I wish Goliath had some pics, love to see what I'm getting into, but a trip up to Palisade Head is definitely in my near future regardless. |

Goliath's finger crack can be easy (5.9) or much harder depending upon if you decide to try to stay in the crack with hands and feet the whole way (embracing the off-widthiness), or use some of the stuff outside the crack (all within tempting reach). Don't forget Superior Crack and the other northshore routes previous posters mentioned if you make it up to Palisade Head. |
