Wife and I are moving to Chattanooga from Colorado. The winters are too brutal in Colorado so we are looking forward to some warmer climbing down south!

We'll be in Chatty at the beginning of May. Posting this in hopes of finding some climbing friends to show us around the local routes. Also, any advice on the city would be much appreciated! Where is the hippie side of town? (If any). We are hoping to find an apartment by High Point. We are in our 20s.

Someone told me chattanooga was the climbing capital of the south.. is that true? Either way we can't wait to get out there and pull with a new crowd!

Chat Steel and Chat Trad are 2 guide books for within 45 minutes of Chatanooga for just sport and trad respectively and they are THICK! Then there's like 8 high quality bouldering areas within 3-4 hours (most within 2) as well as places like RRG + NRG are decent road trips away. There's also a climbing gym in Chatanooga that bought an entire city block and made a compartmentalized climbing gym where they keep the kids area out of your hair!

Chatanooga is awesome and definitely seemed to me to be the climbing capital of the south when I went down in March. We even stayed at a hostel called The Crash Pad owned and operated by climbers!

Not a true local, only spent 5 months here this past fall/winter/spring, but…other than MP and High Point, there is a Facebook page named Chattanooga Outdoor Recreational Rock Climbing for partner searches and meet ups. Sorry, can't show you around, Im moving, but there are tons of climbers around here. You'll find some people pretty easily. Good luck trying to get them outside in the summer. I hear the humidity is a factor and the water sports are excellent in the summer months. Check out Sunset Rock or look for overcast days and early AM sessions.

'Hippies' hmmm, not really, more like hipsters. Lol. And its part of the Bible Belt so careful bringing your legal CO weed down here. JK Lol.

Downtown, the North Shore and St. Elmo are all pretty hip spots. Mocassin Bend has one of the best lagers on earth. Terminal has some good food/beer as well. Lots of good restaurants and a good bar scene.

Tons of climbing; bouldering, sport and trad. Fall will be prime season. Folks from Asheville NC or Fayetteville WV might have some things to say about the ol' climbing capital of the south thing.

Enjoy!

Welcome! Chatt is awesome.
Northshore or southside is good & walking/biking distance to downtown, but can be a little pricey. I live in the Lupton city area (just north of north shore), it's great quiet neighborhood, but a little further out. St. Elmo is good, but some parts are a little sketch.
Feel free to pm me when you get in townif you want to me up etc.
Cheers,
Sharyl

"Brutal Winters??" Really!??
That was like the most amazing "winter" I have ever experienced. Super mild...LOTS of 60-70 degree days...heck, I climbed shirtless in Eldo in Feb~!!~ haha
Anyway, definitely don't move anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon~!

jk..."winter" isn't for everyone.

When are you guys getting into town? (you already there?)

I will be in town next week through the weekend...Looking for a partner (s) if you are interested.

Cheers!
and Good Luck with your new path

Wait until summer rolls around in Chattanooga. You might think it is too hot in the SE. The hippies are in Asheville. Chattanooga is becoming a scene. Just don't go anywhere popular on the weekends and watch out for tweekers. I love the place, but it has blown up in the last few years with it being advertised as the spot.

10-15 years ago the climbing was awesome and the city was just turning the corner. Now the city is a full blown hot spot and the climbing can be a zoo. It's still a darn cool town, especially with the music festivals. Check out Riverbend (spring) and 3 Sisters (fall) plus the weekly free summer shows downtown. You're better off boating during the summers.

Thanks for all the advice! Sheryl, we will definitely hit you up when we get to town! It does look nice up in the Lupton area. We arlooking in outside of downtown now.

To whoever said Colorado didn't have brutal winters.. I was speaking about our town Alamosa, CO. It stays near -20 all winter. I am looking forward to climbing all year round and taking the summers easy on the water. And there is literally no climbing scene in southern colorado. I'm not talking about boulder and the rest of the front range. I'm talking about the cold, windy ass San Luis Valley. We picked chattanooga because of the number of climbers and hopefully we will find a strong climbing community there!

We grew up in Georgia and Florida so the humidity is something we have missed!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
