I recently saw a piece from Jeff Jackson where he refers to a climb as a "rig", I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see that his writing made it to the "climbing clichés".

Because of that, when .11s started happening in places like Eldo/Gunks/Valley we in SoIll really weren't prepared to call anything an .11 ourselves so we called them .10+; ditto with .11+ and .12. As a result, several of our climbs were uprated over the years. I presume it was no different with .9+ - more a matter of respect and not wanting to make bold claims or be out in front of the new grade before it settle in some with widespread consensus.
