hey everyone. We are in the Gunks with rain dumping down. We have the kids with us and wanted to do some top roping with them. Peters kill is closed to climbing still so that option doesn't seem possible. Does anyone know of top rope routes in the trapps? Or anywhere close by?

There was a guide on gunks.com, but that site was overhauled years ago and links to actual content disappeared. The guide is still there with these links to individual pages:

Are you looking for top-ropes that remain dry in the rain or just generally places that it is easy to set up top-ropes in the Gunks once it stops? Also "kids" is very generic. How old and what is their climbing ability, as some quite young children are climbing very hard routes these days!!!I can't think of any pure top-ropes (where you can walk to the top to set the anchors)in the Gunks that remain dry in the rain and are also suitable for young beginning climbers. However, once things dry out, I can recommend the group of routes right above the carriage road near the bridge--Handy Andy, etc. as reasonable top-ropes at modest grades. Also up in the woods roughly above this group of climbs is a set of slabs, maybe 30-40' high that are not listed in the guidebook but have been used for years as a place to introduce first time climbers to the sport.

Thanks.

Kids meaning 9. Their first time outside which is why we were totally planning on top roping in peters kill. Doh! Closed!

Thanks for the tips.

We should have a good time exploring and hopefully finding some climbs.

Someone local mentioned Bonticou?

Thanks again.

I recommend you read those pages Mojomonkey linked to. It was written a good 15 years ago, but it's still the best "guide" to Gunks top-roping there is.

Wait, Peterskill is closed to climbing? Does anyone know when it will open up? I was hoping to make a trip up next week.
