How much of a problem is the rattlesnake issue in April/May? I noticed one photo mentioning seeing 20-30 snakes. Is this typical for the area? Are there any areas that have more or less of them?
Thanks.

i haven't been there lately, but when i used to climb there fairly frequently it seemed like you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a rattlesnake. usually up at the base of the walls. a handful of the routes have names describing these circumstances.

Hmmm - probably depends on which part of the canyon. I've been there about 20 times and have only encountered one rattler.

I'll see one about once per year (maybe every six visits on average). Never seen a den of snakes, although I have seen them in cracks on the face on two occasions.

ha ha, like that one that lived in semi-steep chocolate for a while. i remember trying to toss pebbles up into the crack to verify that he was on vacation, or at least making a trip to the grocery store...
