Just looking for some info on the bolted routes on what I believe is the roadside crag, anybody know names or ratings?

Are you talking Echo Canyon outside of Park City UT?

If so they were put up by a local and are all moderates and well bolted. There are two areas, one right beside the access road and another a quarter mile up the road at an opening in a canyon. When I first found this area by seeing new bolts shinning in the sun while traveling down 80, there was a hand drawn Topo stuffed in an eroded alcove of sorts in the group located in the canyon. I have a copy of it given to me by the gent putting in the routes, but currently don't have access to it.

If you need more information let me know and I will look up his number. He would be trilled to see people on them and has plans to bolt some other routes in the area.

Last time I was at the Clint Eastwood wall there was a topo for the roadside wall with the Clint Eastwood topo.

Maybe it's not the roadside at all, this wall is about a mile east of the dry wall, it has 6 routes from 30 to 50 feet, all with shiny new bolts. The wall faces to the south, towards the interstate, and is about 20 feet off the road. First aw it months ago, and finally tried it yesterday with the kids, had a lot of fun, just curious about it.

I think you are describing roadside wall and like i said, check the topo at the clint Eastwood wall because it had a topo for roadside wall with it last time i was there.

Last time I was up there I took a picture of the topo. Here you go.

Thank you, that's it. I can't remember exactly which route, either the fourth or the fifth from the left has a spinner hanger, looks like just need to tighten the nut, but I was in the wife's suburban and no tools. It still felt like solid placement. I will try to catch it next time I'm there if somebody else doesn't first. Again thanks for the info, just curious, why has nobody put a lot of these routes on this site?

I've thought about putting them on the site, but with how much work they've done on these new areas, and the topos they left at the crag, I didn't want to step on anyone's toes. The Clint Eastwood wall isn't represented very well on the site either.

That's my feelings exactly, I don't want to be the one to put them on here since I didn't make them, but they are well protected, fun routes. I have some great pics to add if they ever do get posted.

I went ahead and added the area with the topo. I haven't climbed any of the routes on the Roadside Crag yet, so I don't really have good descriptions to add the routes.

I added the routes for Roadside with some pics, left first ascents as not known.

I think you guys are fine to add those areas/routes. The guy who put up the routes (Dan) once told me he didn't have an account on mp and doesn't post anything.
I don't know him very well, only bumped into him once, and returned a pair of shoes he lost once, but seems like a cool dude that would be stoked for more traffic on his routes.

the mtn proj page says there's a seasonal closure til 2nd weekend of april... this is true, right?

I don't believe so, I think the seasonal closure is only for areas that are up the side canyons. Areas right on the road like roadside crag, dry wall, and clint Eastwood wall are open year round.

The areas that are closed have yellow signs that say so in very visible spots. Roadside, dry wall, clint eastwood, and bull hollow don't have signs. A county cop drove by while we were climbing the roadside the other day and he didn't stop or anything.

I have chatted with Dan on several occasions and he's stoked to have people on the routes. He doesn't have an account but told me to post them. I obviously never did.
He's put a LOT of time and money into the development of these cliffs and knows that they will get better with traffic. Post away.
As for the closure it is in place for animals "wintering". Since we had no winter the Elk and Deer were never pushed to the canyon bottom. So probably not an issue.
Further more from the Topo with land management overlay I do not think that the Clint Eastwood wall is on State land subject to the closure.

About the Echo Canyon seasonal closure, some of the closure signs are obviously broken and missing, so rather than guess about what is included and what is not, I asked the biologist at DWR about this. This was their response:

“The main reason for the seasonal closure on the Henefer-Echo WMA is to protect wintering big game wildlife populations (primarily deer and elk) from disturbances during the winter months. When the animals are disturbed during this period of time, it can cause the animals to use up more of their fat reserves and, depending upon the winter, it can contribute to them not surviving the winter.

That being said, the cliffs along the frontage roads along I-80 and I-84, are used by nesting golden eagles, peregrine falcons and other raptors which could be disturbed by climbers in the vicinity.

To clarify, the entire property is annually closed Jan. 1 to the second Saturday in April. From your emails, it also sounds like many of our signs have been removed and that we need to re-post many of the areas.”

Here is a map outlining the WMA.

My take is, to prevent year-round access issues, it would be best to avoid climbing in Echo Canyon during the winter seasonal closure period.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
