anyone have any useful tips/recommendations? I'm looking to camp one or two nights in each park. Would I have to reserve a spot far in advance or just show up? The websites for both parks aren't super clear on these things plus I've never been so I don't really know the lay of the land. Any advice is helpful.

You shouldn't have a problem in May finding a spot at the Gros Ventre campground in GTNP and if you keep driving on the same road you can camp on BLM/NF land for free out by the landslide. Also good camping here- fs.usda.gov/recarea/btnf/re…

Grassy Lakes Road, between the two parks, has lots of free camping. I'm not sure how much is officially open in GTNP in May, but it won't be crowded.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
