RR Rendezvous Crags?

Thanks for posting up Andrew. And Thanks to Chuck Parks who copied the text from the MG-RRR website. The information on the website is very incomplete and it is worth pointing out that there are many discrepancies with crags Andrew has listed and the routes listed on the RRR website, which is total joke.

Also contrary to what the website claims, the clinic sites are not in "just four major areas," unless you don't consider Calico Basin to be a "major area." Calico Basin is home to Moderate Mecca, Kraft Boulders, Cannibal Crag, Riding Hood Wall, Dickies Cliff, Gnat Man Crag, Jabba the Hut, Hide and Seek, Cowlick Crag, Cut Your Teeth, and The Fox, all of which are being used for the Rendezvous. That's 11 of the 35 "crags" being over-run by Rendezvousers. Sounds like a major area to me.

I'm going to assume that Andrew's info is accurate. Of the 30 crags listed on the RRR website, 18 are not in Andrew's list; nor were they in last year's BLM list. So, yeah, Thanks Chuck, but the website info is...fictional face, painty waist worthless. 12 out of 30 correct, it's a good average if you're swinging at baseballs, not so much when you are informing the public...or future clients.

Also Andrew, MP spokesperson for RRR, please confirm details of the 6th major climbing area you are now monopolizing; because I am confused by your post. Did the BLM approve of 2 more additional days of Lotta Balls Wall/First Creek Slabs domination? Because last year it was just one day. Is this a typo or should the public just forget about the Lotta Balls Wall for 3 days while you run your trains up & down?

Mark,

Last year we used Lotta Balls wall Saturday and Sunday, this year includes Friday.

Cheers,

While I do not run the RRR website at all, I'm guessing they may have just unmaliciously forgot to update the list, and it was copy/pasted from a previous years event. As the event has developed, so have new crags. While it's understandably frustrating that the additional crags weren't posted on the RRR public website (something I will ask them to change), it is ultimately a good thing that more crags are being used as it disperses use. There is a relatively stable number of clinic participants, and therefore utilizing more crags means less people at each crag, and an easier time sharing the resource with the general public if they are wanting to climb at the crag.

That said, I am under no illusions that it will be busy and less desirable for the public user.

I will also recommend to MG/RRR to reference five major cragging areas (Calico Basin, 1st Pullout, 2nd Pullout, Sandstone Quarry, and Willow Springs) and one major multi-pitch area. Utilizing the "first creek slabs," basically means we might be guiding Rising Moons but that's it, all the other routes are too long for our purposes that day.

As Doug mentioned, we have been doing two days of multi-pitch for the last two years. This year, it has increased to three days of multi-pitch, on the Lotta Balls Wall. Both years I encountered public climbing parties on that wall during the multi-pitch day, and both years we asked them which of the many routes on that wall they wanted to climb, and we got on whatever was left. We try our best to be accommodating.

We have a joint AAI/MG/RRR meeting prior to the event, and every year it is reiterated to us that we should work had to amicably climb alongside the general public and be the best stewards of the resource we can be.

I'm not the official or unofficial spokesperson for MG/RRR/AAI. I just saw the post and agree that this information should be shared in an accurate and more timely way.

Super useful for planning. Thanks so much Andrew.

Andrew- Thank you again for posting crag information for RRR and Thank you for your diplomacy in serving as default liaison/spokesperson for MG/AAI-RRR. Nobody is accusing MG of maliciously not updating the list on their website. "Neglectfully" forgot to update the list would be more accurate. This neglect leads to misinformation which leads to climbers like Chuck (above in thread) strategizing to steer clear of Spikes&Twine, Nevada Book, Mass Production, Split Infinity*, Black Tract*, the Trophy or the 12 other crags listed on website where there won't even be any RRR clinics. Or, worse, climbers like Chuck utilize the RRR website crag list as a source and head out to one of the 24 crags that are being used...and not listed on the site. Surprise! Thought you were going to red-point the Fox today?

As far as multi-pitch, last year's info (Nick's BLM post from 3/27/14 above in thread) states that the only day of multi-pitch climbing in First Creek was Friday, 3/28/14. Yesterday, Doug posted: "last year we used Lotta Balls Wall Saturday and Sunday." Huh...sounds like your commercial activity didn't exactly line up with what the BLM thought you were doing, certainly doesn't correspond to what the BLM posted...less than 24 hours before the activity.

Let's just chalk it up to sloppy dissemination of information. It's the norm these days.

I'm curious what you mean specifically by a "relatively stable number" of clinic participants. 200? 500? 35 crags x 8 paying customers x twice/day for 2 days = Sounds like well over a 1000 User Days to me. And that's not even counting multi-pitch activity. Stable? or Unsustainable?

Much like your subjective term "relatively stable number of clinic participants," the phrase "best stewards of the resource we can be" is confusing at best and misleading at worst. For anybody who has been around Red Rock for more than a few years, equating the Rendezvous with stewardship of Red Rock resources is misleading; but it's good advertising. So, by all means, correct me if I am wrong and please wax poetic about exactly how the Rendezvous plays a role in the stewardship of an already over-used, sometimes abused, and often neglected international climbing area. Clearly, I need to buy a vowel.

More scrutiny to come....

Red Rock Rendezvous Project

Mark,

This trail project was performed mainly by participants of the Red Rock Rendezvous. Mountain Gear has also been generous in their support of the LVCLC. Sorry about any confusion or last minute info of the crags that were used. I will make it a point to assist in getting accurate information posted earlier for 2016. Thanks to Andrew for taking the time to get it posted this year.

Cheers,

Doug

Did anybody go climbing this weekend to find all of the routes they wanted to get on occupied by the Rendezvous? If so what happened? I was at the Rendezvous but did not attend any of the clinics. I went climbing, had a great time and met lots of friendly people and climbers. It was a great weekend for me at Red Rock.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
