First Flatiron Ski Descent March 1

Holy shit. That is a ski decent. None of this stupid 'sidestepping on a tensioned rope' BS. Damn. But did he tell tgr, and climbing, and Virtika, and the rest of the internets? Does he has superstaged pics on his Instagram to prove it? These are the real questions.

Climbed the first today and thought about the alleged ski decent. Out of curiosity, did anyone ever see the video that was so many times alluded too but never released?

Not trying to restart this argument, just curious if it was quietly released at some point.

I watched footage of a man on skis, in a snow "covered" area that looked like the 1st. This was around this time it happened.

What I really remember seeing is an insanely thin patch of snow that kept falling off the rock as soon as the skis touched the area. I thought to myself that the same achievement could be done in the summer, if there were a way to really slow down where the snow usually piles up along the sides of the gully.

Yeehaw, back from the dead! Yeah, did the footy ever drop??

The dude got lowered down with skis strapped on, big deal.

Silk Road is very sketchy to lead. The ice is 1/4 inch and delaminating, snow hides gear placements. The route is falling down on you as you climb it.

Wouldn't you be pissed if someone hiked around the top to be lowered onto you with skis on for a publicity stunt and then talked about how dangerous it was for them? Glad everything worked out fine for the climbers, but this definitely made it a more dangerous day for the people actually at risk (climbers below the hotshot rappeller).

David - I'm one of those climbers who was leading up the sketchy terrain.

The skiers did actually start before us - we knew about it from the ground but went anyway.

If you remove all the BS about publicity, they don't have any less right to recreate than we do. When our ropes did cross, they followed all of our suggestions and we managed to use different anchors and steer clear.

More than anything, those guys have skied things that are actually really gnarly, seems odd they would pick toprope skiing as their claim to fame.

I think that the claim to fame thing is built up because we are in our bubble and want to make mountains out of mole hills. I don't remember him building up what he did, but I also don't feel like re-reading this whole thread. Wasn't it like one article and then the footage was posted and removed because all anyone was doing was hating on the guy?

He probably has just really wanted to ski the first for a really long time, and found a way to do it.

Austin will be presenting, "Extreme Skiing on Longs Peak and Colorado Mts." at the Longs Peak Reunion on the 22nd. Should be very interesting along with the other speakers, including Tom Hornbein and Tommy.

I think everyone is making more of a big deal out of both ends than it should be. Was it gnar? Not really, but does he get some gnar points for doing it? I think yeah.

When the 3rd got skied back in 2007 by Bill Wright and Stefan Griebel was it contrived? A bunch of raps to ski a small chute that almost never comes in. Cool opportunity, and I'm jealous.

Or Johnny Dawes "no hands climbing" on TR. Stupid? Sure, but screw it...it's his world and he's making something out of it. People are always doing contrived things.

I think it's cool alone that someone had an idea, and pulled the trigger. Not everything is going to be a Reinhold Messner caliber event. I'm pretty sure I was sitting on my couch while Austin was coming down the first.

"Cry in dojo, laugh in battlefield," this was training for bigger objectives. I wish Austin the best of luck on his bigger endeavors.-Cheers

Exactly.

With this experience, he's probably ready to be lowered down the 3rd, 4th, maybe even 5th flatiron. Haters gonna hate.

Anyone considering skiing  any of the Flatirons this Sunday/Monday? If forecast comes through it’s going to be INSANE!

Don’t get your hopes up. Every time I  check, They keep revising the totals downward.

You resurrected a thread to bash me for what I posted 6 years ago? And you blew the quote, attributing something to me that I did not write.

And in avi terrain it is considered highly irresponsible to ski above other parties.

So I suggest that you STFU.
