Will be visiting Nov 18-30. Looking to sneak out for a day or two. Love all forms of climbing in all situations: trad/sport, single/multi-pitch, back country/roadside, easy/hard, hot/cold...you name it. Just no lightning. I can bring the rack/rope/draws. Will be using Tokyo as base, but will be moving around to Kyoto and other locations like Takayama. Lemme know!

(Also happy to hear any beta, too!)

Some roped climbing around Tokyo;

Jogasaki seems to be really good.

Ogawayama in Yamanashi is said to be the "camp4 of japanese climbing"

I don't have any route climbing gear with me in Japan, but let me know if you plan on going bouldering.

Hmm, I could be convinced to bring my rack. You do trad? I can also boulder, too. Good stuff near Tokyo?

If either of you plan to boulder, I'd be interested in joining. In Japan until Dec 5.

Sorry, I don't do trad, my sportclimbing is pretty weak anyway.
Here is a video starting with a trip to Jogasaki, looks good:

For bouldering the easiest place to get to from Tokyo is Mitake. Take Chuo line from Shinjuku to Ome and change there to Ome line for Okutama, get out at Mitake cross the road and you're there. On the lefthand side from the station there's a climbingshop where you can rent a pad. During the weekend there are lots of people bouldering, so pads will be present at the various boulders.
The rock in Mitake is pretty slippery by nature and from obvious over-use being so close to Tokyo. I wouldn't call Mitake a great bouldering venue and it's quite small but there are some good problems. Best problems start around 1kyu (about 6C+/7A), there are also lots of easier problems on small rocks.
I'll post in this thread if I plan on going out to Mitake. Will depend on the weather and available free time ofcourse.

cool. I've heard of Mitake. I'm down in the Yokohama/Yokosuka area. If you know of any places further this way I'd be interested to learn about those as well. Would be nice to get out of the gym, maybe I'll just make Mitake happen one of these weekends.

I think Mitake is the easiest accessible bouldering with public transport even from Yokohama. Just take the Toyoko line from Yokohama station to Shinjuku Sanchome station. Around this time it will be quite beautiful around Mitake with the autumn leaves and in the weekends you don't have to worry about being alone, that's for sure.
For route climbing around Yokohama / Yokosuka check the link I've posted in the thread above.
If you have a car and are thinking about going to Ogawayama or Mizugaki please let me know, I'd be interesting in joining.
