Springs. Be prepared for super conservative people, although still Springs over Aurora.

I'm in SE Denver, near Aurora. For me, the closest climbing is 25 minutes away, 45 minutes in rush hour. Aurora is a little farther from the hills, so add 10 minutes to that or add 20 minutes in rush hour. The Springs is much closer to climbing than that.

Somewhat depends on what you do for work ? Springs is getting a bit better, but still rather conservative.

Aurora is closer to DIA if you want to leave !

I grew up in the Springs and loved it.

Springs does tend to have its fair share of redneck/republican/jesus fanatics/methheads, but it also offers a pretty chill climbing scene and great access to running, mountain biking, and climbing within 10 minutes away.

are there more climbers in one or the other

Neither would be my first choice in the Front Range, but given those two options, I'd choose the Springs by a wide margin. In Aurora, there is a big ugly sprawling city and some soul-sucking traffic between you and the mountains, and the town of Aurora is just brutal suburbia. In the Springs, you'll have a much easier time getting out into the hills, especially if you live on the west side of town (or in Manitou...which is a super cool little town).

'Aurora is closer to DIA if you want to leave !'

Which you most definitely would want to do if you lived in Aurora. In the springs you are relatively close to the plethora of climbing that exists in the south platte area which is my favorite climbing area due to the fact that you don't run into the crowds that you would around Boulder and Golden. I'm not sure about this but I think that you are about half as likely to be murdered in the Springs as compared to Aurora.

You'll have no trouble finding climbing partners if you live near the front range. There are climbers in every town.

Unless you are a frequent air traveler who will go to DIA often (very often), there is little reason for considering Aurora. The previous posts have summed it up very well.

I grew up in the Denver suburbs near golden, and live in the Springs now while I'm at school. When the weather is nice (not like lately) the Garden is a fun crag to hang out at after work, etc. South Platte is easy to get to, and shelf road is only an hour or so away. The climbing scene is pretty excellent in the Springs too.

PM me if you end up down here, always looking for partners.

To be more specific, IMHO the west side of the Springs is the best place.

East of I25 towards Powers just gets way to crazy crowded and further away from climbing. West of I25 puts you closer to the mountains and if you can, live close to 24, which takes you out past GOG, RR Open Space and further west to the SPlatte, and all kinds of great climbing. Despite the judgments of previous posts it's fairly laid back on the west side (IMHO) and if I had to choose this would be the area. I've run business up in Aurora and it's way to crowded for me and I came from NYC 15 years ago.
