Guideline #1 on this site is don't be a jerk. It's simple kindergartner principles. If you don't have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. I should add also that if you don't have anything informative to say, don't say anything at all. Its a shame to see so many posts, especially those posted in "Beginning Climbers: HELPING beginners get into the sport," that a. clearly contradict guideline #1 (you can still be an asshole by being a passive aggressive asshole), and b. certainly aren't helping beginners get into the sport. And the saying "if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing it" has to be the most overrated useless piece of advice out there. People on forums ask fairly simple questions, can't we do them a favor by giving fairly simple answers. Rock climbing is not rocket science. Plain and simple. Can you break down every piece of a cam or a redundant anchor into complex mathematical formula and provide way too much information? Sure can. Is it needed or warranted? Most of the time I think not.

When I started climbing I was peer pressured into rappelling. It went just fine. Was I gonna die? Most likely could have. Did I? Nope. My buddy and I went out not soon after and went halves on a rope, quickdraw, lockers, a belay device, and some slings. Did we know what we were doing? Most certainly not. Did we successfully top rope a few routes that day? Sure depending on your definition of success.

All I'm trying to say it's lets give people sound advice, not the if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing it. Also people don't need a link to google for the answers they're seeking. They come to this site in hopes of climbers helping climbers or soon to be climbers out.

Stay safe, learn the ropes, don't let go of your break hand. Keep in mind that climbing is a dangerous sport and there might not be a chance for trial and error, just error. That's the risk we take and so be it. Bolts can be suspect. People can be suspect. Good looking placements can be suspect. Get out there and put an effort in. Go to a gym and take a class. Or don't. Hire a guide. Or don't. Use some common sense and stay safe. Look at the professionals. I've seen so many videos of pro climbers using terrible belay techniques, super shady anchoring techniques, taking huge unnecessary victory whips. Etc. Etc. Etc. end rant. and sorry there's no free beer. not unless by chance we someday meet and get a few pitches in, in that case I'm buying.

Rule 1- don't be a jerk.
Don't post free beer then piss and moan about an Internet forum....with no free beer.

Well said. We were all beginners at one point wondering the same questions we see posted here everyday. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Great post, Wilson. The guideline, "Don't be a jerk" is sound for this forum and all of life. Part of what I love about climbing is that it's a mentored sport. Most times, those mentors are in person. But they can be online, too. As supportive a community as climbers tend to be, most of us could likely up our game in this area, and extend kindness even to newbees.

Complaining about haters and voicing your preference that they stop is like telling a convicted serial killer, fresh outta isolation and back on the streets, you'd prefer he didn't kill someone. They don't do it while wondering if they'll feel bad, and perhaps they don't know what feeling bad IS after they commit to the act. The indecent (funny, entertaining, time-killing) comments are up for grabs, and someone's gonna bid on that slot! Hope this helps ;)

I'm outgrowing the negative sh*t. I do more reading and supporting reality with my experience and logic (what little I may have, to some people. But, f*** it!) than anything else. I'm ALWAYS learning new sh*t. Gotta love it!

A cyber slap on il mano goes out to all the nerdy f***in' cowards that wrinkle their nose and snicker after hitting submit when they think what they're saying means a damn.

I'm reporting this thread because there is no free beer whatsover.

Do not title your thread "free beer" ever again.

EVER!

And no threads titled "This weird little trick helps burn fat" or "Colorado Insurance comapanies don't want you to know this one trick."

Yeah. OP owes us free beer!

And yes, people are often pretty rude on the internet. I don't think it's anything unique to MP or climbers. Just the way people are these days.
Easy on the net to say things you might not say to someones face.

My suggestion is to ignore the trolls (unless you find them entertaining) and realize that there is plenty of community and good info on MP if you filter out the nonsense.

Compared to some of the pro sports sites I've been on, MP is pretty mild...

Look kid. It sounds like your panties are in a bunch. This is a forum where people come to discuss climbing. Opinions differ. People are passionate about it. And sometimes they can be a little bit harsh. But just because you don't like their opinion doesn't mean they're being a jerk. Get over it. Move On If you don't like what someone has to say. Or if you need to call mommy press the flag button.

And you make it sound like bringing new climbers in deserves some sort of martyrdom and is a really noble cause. It's not like we're saving abused kittens or curing cancer here.

We could say you are being a jerk by posting a fake title. But I think everyone knew it was fake anyway. There was a band in the early 90s called free beer so you would see signs free beer at such and such bar or Tavern. Not a new concept. But I don't care that you're being kind of a jerk.

Now quit being such a Sally and get your G string out of your butt crack. Rant rebutte over.

Offering beer then refusing to follow through is neither nice, nor informative. You should take your own advice.

"Free Beer" is the only way he'd get us dirtbags to read this and I totally fell for it, damn you!

All joking aside, there's a local news forum that has 3 different "levels" of forum posts and replies. Whichever level you choose to post under, the user has to follow those terms and conditions or else they get blocked. This allows the forum readers to basically filter out the nonsense that the OP was referring to with a click of a button, thus allowing for the trolling shenanigans to ensue while letting those who'd like to live in a bubble be happy and free to do so. Maybe an MP admin can chime in, but I could see it being pretty applicable on MP.

On a different topic, anyone have some delicious homebrews they want to share?
