Gear Storage Question

Hey guys, this may be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask anyway. I see a lot of people on here and that I know store their gear in dark totes. I generally sort my gear and clean it then just store it in my pack so I'm ready to go next time. The pack is stored in my closet out of sunlight and the gear is clean. Is this ok, or a problem? Thanks!

It's fine, stored in a pack. What do you mean by you "clean it"? And let your shoes air dry, out of the pack.

Cool, thanks.

And I Just make sure there isn't any dirt on the rope and that the cams aren't dirty and lubricated if they need to be.

That's what I do - minus the goofy and unnecessary cleaning bit.

Only thing I store in a tote is stuff I'm not going to be using for awhile, and that's just for organization and to keep the mice out since I store stuff in my garage.

It may be goofy to some, but I'm sure it is not unnecessary. I find it gives me extra time to inspect my gear that I spent a lot of money on.

I store my gear in bunches in a closet, hung from a few hangers on the wall. This helps me keep it all organized and easy to get to. I throw what I need in a pack and go. Reverse procedure when I get back home.

Good that you're taking care of your gear. As an additional consideration: One of the issues we face in Vegas is the crippling summer heat (my comments may not apply to those who don't face this). I'm careful what I keep in my garage during our hot seasons (temps hit 110, and hotter, regularly in my garage, which faces south). Heat breaks down elastic (headlamp headbands, harness leg strap attachments, etc.), glues (climbing and approach shoes), etc. I'm not referring here to direct sunlight--which also presents UV issues--but shaded, covered space. Of course, I don't store any gear in my car, as THAT heat can reach temps well north of 120. Some gear, subjected to high temps for prolonged time periods, will age/break down/dry out much more rapidly. Hope this helps.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
