Sunshirt/ Summer shirt not smelling

Hey guys. I am looking at doing some extended trips to the canyon lands this summer where I will be exposed to the sun all day long. For the most part I have seen 90% polyester 10% spandex (or so) shirt mixes. I think polyester makes me smell so bad. Does anyone have an alternative to polyester? Or does the smell treatment companies put on polyester actually work?

Thanks!

What Jesse said. I saw an outdoor research shirt recently that was a silk weight base layer and still made out of merino. Expensive, but will definitely be on my list of purchases for this summer.

I have worked in the desert for years. In the summer I wear a long sleeve button up cotton shirt. Merino wool is great too. In the desert cotton's death properties are ideal. It's the one place where cotton is awesome as outdoor clothing.

wool is really nice if you expect to be wet or chilled, but in a really dry, warm environment why not just wear cotton?

I'm with Sunny-D. I'd look for a long sleeve cotton shirt with a upf rating if possible. I think Royal Robbins actually makes something that might fit the bill. Seems I saw some of their shirts at Sierra Trading Post pretty cheap. I dont think most anti-stink technologies work very well but thats just my experience.

Anybody have a SPF rated Merino shirt?

I believe Icebreaker does. Might be a little toasty for Canyonlands, not sure. Remember that clothing is rated by UPF, not SPF.

Long sleeve pearl snap from your local cowboy store. It is the desert after all

NickO is right on with this. go to Cal Ranch or Reams or any other local hardware store and you will find exactly what you are looking for. A nice tight weave cotton button up shirt. it will keep the sun and bugs out and keep you nice and cool. You can get great patterns as well. Awesome Low-Tech.

If you want merino, Sierra trading post has icebreaker and smart wool. They are upf rated. This code, might expire tomorrow, JMN39673 will get the price as reasonable as possible. If it expires, they alway have codes coming out.
IMO, merino is awesome for stench on long trips, but tends to snag easily on rock-compared to some of the other fabrics available.

Merino isn't really durable.. It's great for base layers though.

Back home in Australia everyone wears long sleeve cotton drill shirts for working outside. All UPF rated, keeps you cool. They don't come in plaid though, which could be a deal breaker.

I also hike a lot in a Craghoppers Nosilife ls shirt. It's a really nice, light, durable shirt which doesn't smell as bad as the usual, but definitely not as nice as cotton.

Smelling terrible is half the fun!

Merino wool or smart wool are great choices. The outdoor research growler shirt is great also. I like it because you can flip up the collar and keep the sun off the back of your neck. It breathes really well so you won't sweat too much, also dries quickly so you can wash out and put back on.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
