That is arborist/ lineman (communications, think cell towers) climbing gear. The more rural you get, CL is littered with this stuff. |

why don't they just use regular harnesses? i mean they have got to be both safer and more comfortable. |

The harness in the picture is made for gaffing "using spikes near the insoles of each foot" and the rings on either hip are for a flip line "lanyard" so for pines or poles you never actually sit in the harness, just lean back on your lanyard. Still pretty old school though. All my old Arbor harnesses had a seat strap or leg loops. The guy was probably a lineman and didn't climb anything but power poles. |

Eli, all harnesses are specialized according to the job being performed. rock climbing harnesses are made for mobility and catching falls, especially upside down falls. Linemen and some arborist use spikes to climb and spend hours standing on them so they just need a waist strap. other arborist climb with rope much like rock climbers but they tend to sit or lean in their harness for long periods of time so the harness usually has some kind of built in seat. |

While climbing harnesses are designed to flip you around if you fall upside down (with varying levels of success), they are not the best option to catch inverted falls. If you expect inverted falls, the best option is a full-body harness, similar to those used in bungee jumping. That said, I have fallen upside down a few times without issue, but there have been cases where climbers (using the term loosely as they are typically complete novices) have nearly fallen out of their harnesses while upside down because their harnesses were far too loose. |
