I'm headed out to Portland for a business trip at the end of April and am planning to stay longer such that I'd have the last week of April to do something outdoors in OR or southern WA.
My usual choice would be alpine climbing, rock/snow/ice, but don't know if this is too early for alpine rock objectives. Coming from the northeast I don't have much experience climbing in NW conditions for snow & ice around this time, so I don't know if routes are sketchy with avalanche conditions, etc. or something would be in shape.
Curious to hear what people would suggest to look at for alpine objectives in late April, or I'm open open to alpine cragging type destinations, or just cool outdoors / backpacking trips in general. I'm not a big sport climber, but Smith Rock looks cool of course, don't know what it's like in April though or if it's better to go in summer/fall.
Any ideas, books, links, etc., greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Not much alpine rock in OR - mostly volcanic except for the Wallowas etc. Hood should be a good quick one from Portland - weather/snow/avalanche conditions at the time TBD. And Smith pretty good then too - unless a storm or cold spells hitting at the time.
