Sport Climbing and Bouldering in Columbia, Peru, Argentina . . .

Hi Y'all -

So I'm aiming for some preliminary beta on climbing in South America for the summer.

Basically, my girlfriend is a nurse looking at international programs in South America for 1-2 months (June/July), and as a high school teacher, I'll have the entirety of the time off and will just be climbing.

All of the programs she has been looking at are around major cities, and since we have limitless options right now, it's a little overwhelming to start. Main areas we have looked at are around Bogota, Columbia and Lima, Peru.

Ideally I can find a place that has options for both roped sport/trad/multipitch climbing and bouldering; my concern is that if I can't convince 1-2 of my partners from the US to come down, I'll only be able to boulder during the week, so I want to have all options available.

Thoughts? Thanks.

Hey there,

I can say Colombia is a great option. Bogota has several areas with excellent climbing both sport and trad that are within an hour or so. The climbing community is small but friendly. There are also two climbing gyms in town. One is to rope up and the other is strictly bouldering. you can find partners and connect with people there. There are other areas further north in different regions of the country that you could take long weekend trips to. Florian is about three hours north of Bogota with amazing limestone climbing. Truly unreal. North of that near Bucaramanga you have La Mojarra which is, in my opinion, world class. I have friends who own a hostel next to the crag, on the rim of the canyon, who have developed a lot of the routes there.

This is a cool short film to check out if youre interested in what the climbing looks like: vimeo.com/63341949

Sweet! Much appreciated on the info and I'll have to watch this video with sound (at work and just scanned through the pretty climbing scenery).

Hey mkclimb,

have been only in Peru from those countries you mention. However you should check out "Hatun Machay" near Huaraz. The biggest sport climbing + bouldering destination in Peru as far as I have studied it on the web:)

Huaraz is a base point for mountaineering trips into Cordillera Blanca (lot of beautiful trekking/climbing/mountaineering).

I got some climbing pictures here: nzclimb.blogspot.de/p/peru-…

Hey everyone!

In Arequipa, Peru right now, but I'm getting ready to make a jump. After seeing these posts, I'm inclined to check out some of the spots. I'm interested what you have to say about Huancayo. I'll be flying out of Lima, and would want to get some climbing in before I leave. Will anyone be in the area in the next few weeks? Or can anyone recommend any contacts / places to stay?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Hey MIke,

I just left Arequipa last week. I headed south to Arica and leaving soon for San Pedro de Atacama. I found a great climbing spot called Socaire-80 km south of SP Atacama. If you end up heading this way let me know. I need a climbing partner!
