I have had better luck with the Squid since my initial attempt at using it but still find it difficult and somewhat frustrating. I rarely stick clip anything anyway, so maybe it would be better if I practiced

Thanks for the input.

I'm gonna pick up a superclip this weekend. And then try and find a pole that has a decent reach and packs up short.

I find a stick with a Y shape, and balance the draw up to the bolt while using the Canadian Pebble Trick (holding the gate open with a pebble) and then just finesse it until the draw's nose has slid into the bolt, then I just pull down on both strands of the rope. No tape or extra device necessary.

It only works with Petzl Spirits or BD Positrons, all other biners don't work that well with it. I like it - it has a brush holder for removing chalk from higher holds. Also you can bring it on the route, but hey, as per Matt Samet, this could lead to potential abuse...

lowes.com/pd_109411-1316-44… is what I use. Very sturdy, I can walk with it in one hand. Could be lighter is the only downside, but for cragging I love it.

Best setup money can buy, IMO:

Ettore 4.8ft to 16ft pole l - Well constructed, easy to deploy and a relatively small 4.8 ft when stored.

Superclip - Super simple (unlike the squid), can easily clip the rope into a hanging draw, can easily unclip draws from bolts. Downside: Pricey.

Superclip certainly looks easier to use than the Squid. Wish I had heard of it before I purchased the Squid.

How did you make it?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
