he also has aweful arm movements and head bobbing. as an aside its interesting that there are AMGA, single Pitch and Rock guides on his page. I wonder if they are being used.

Talk about "piling on." Like an out of control mob.

You wrote a book called "10 steps to epic rock climbing", and then hired a guide to climb 5.7s in Eldo? What step are you on now?

I think politeness is not an option. more cheesesteaks.

I aspire to not have the word "epic" associated with my climbing outings. Any epic that I've experienced hasn't been caused by poor planning :)

In 20 years time you can look back at your website and think what we are thinking right now.

Rob, I was among the AMGA certified instructors and guides quoted here
In Pieters defense he was up front in the few emails we exchanged. If I had to guess he got email addresses from everyone on the AMGA "Hire A Guide" page. I looked at his page and expressed my concerns of my/my employers' names being associated with an untrained and uncertified entity releasing what seemed to be educational information to the public. In the end I agreed to answer his question.

Just had to point out the irony here - from the very first "advice from a guide" quote on that page:

"It can be hard to know who is teaching correct techniques especially because you probably don’t know them yourself."

Like, for example....

Pieter, I hate to see you get torn up like this, but these fine folk really do know what they're talking about. My brother and I had a similar idea to start a climbing instructional YouTube channel and (eventually) website a couple years ago. After editing together the first couple videos, we took a step back, watched them through with a highly self-critical eye, and came to the inescapable conclusion that we did not know NEARLY enough about climbing to be producing such instructional materials. We lacked training and certifications, we lacked experience, and we lacked sufficient knowledge to be trying to teach new-comers how to employ systems that are going to stand between them and grievous injury/death.

So what did we do? We swallowed our pride and decided to shelf the project for a few years (or a few decades) until we actually know what the heck we are talking about. The videos we made never ended up seeing the light of day, and that's not going to change. Maybe someday we'll look back at them and laugh at how we almost posted that garbage on the Internet with the pretense of being "experts".

I understand you love climbing and love sharing it with others. Believe me, I do, too! But there's plenty of other ways to make a buck without jeopardizing the safety of others by teaching technical skills that you are not qualified to teach. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there for the whole Internet to criticize, but it takes even more courage to concede that the critics are right and you've ventured into territory where you have no business being. As a fellow climber, I hope you will find the courage to do the mature thing and heed the advice that is being given you.

Nicely said, Rob. In contrast to some of the other posts.

I thought your comment was light-hearted and not malicious like some of the others. Deliverance was a great movie. And nothing wrong with a little voyeurism by you!
