I will be headed to Phoenix for job training mar 2nd. What are some areas that are close to downtown for an afternoon of climbing? I am interested in some bouldering or crack climbing.

As far as I know any good bouldering or good crack climbing is going to be about an hour outside of downtown in Queen Creek canyon. Camelback mountain has some multi-pitch crack climbing but you run the risk of running into a bee hive (They are pretty nasty up there).

there are some areas to go bouldering in south mountain. It's about 20 minutes id say from downtown at most.

For some crack climbing try Pinnacle Peak or McDowells. Camelback and queen creek are mostly bolted. You can pick up $5 fold out guides at REI

For an afternoon of bouldering try Camelback if near center of town or South Mountain's Pima Canyon if you are south of town. I prefer Pima Canyon. Good rock and the first problem you come to in the canyon is easy to do alone. Great landing.

Crack climbing in Pinnacle Peak or McDowells would require a quick drive and hike which might take up the afternoon and leave little time to climb. Stick to the bouldering.
