When I was in a military unit which had medics it was pretty common for some people to get an IV when they were hungover, had dehydration headaches, and a few other ailements. They swore by them. |

IV with 1000ml of NS is the classic cure EMT's do on themselves. Thiamine is B-12, which is the med we use for alcohol induced stuff like seizures, coma, DT's, etc. |

When you start thinking about stinking stuff into your veins, maybe it is time to think about getting a life. |

Which is likely nobody on this forum who isn't currently seizing or just coming off a month long drinking binge. |

William Kramer wrote:Thiamine is B-12 Nope Thiamine is B1, B12 is hydroxocobalamin William Kramer wrote: which is the med we use for alcohol induced stuff like seizures, coma, DT's, etc Nope. We use benzos or barbituates for DT's- which include alcohol withdrawal siezures. Thiamine is given to hopefully ward of Wernicke's encephalopathy, something chronic alcoholics are at risk for |

It's fun watching a climbing forum turn to patho phys, pharmacology and pharm dynamics. |

Very wrong. Thiamine does absolutely nothing for DTs. You give this for other reasons. Benzos are absolutely the mainstay of alcohol withdrawal treatment. This has nothing to do with this thread. Let's get back on topic |

This has nothing to do with this thread. Let's get back on topicBy benzos I'm assuming you mean midazolam, diazepam, or ativan? Those are still the front line meds for seizures, but indications for Thiamine is seizure or coma of unknown nature that alcohol abuse is subject, or seizures caused by delirium tremens. Thiamine is coenzyme in the body used for the metabolism of pyruvate to acetyl-coenzyme-A, the base of ATP production and start of the Kreb's cycle. Alcohol interferes with the bodies use of Thiamine, if prolonged can lead to Wernike's and Karosakoff's psychosis due to thiamine deficiency. No it doesn't have anything really to do with this thread, I confused Thiamine (B1) with B12, and was corrected on that. I can say from experience that an IV with normal saline does wonders for a hangover though, just usually not an allowed practice unless it is a 911 call, I've known Medics to get fired over it. |
