Hello, I'm looking to buy a multi-pitch pack for long day ascents. Here's what i'll need to put in it:

size 13 approach shoes
3L hydration sleeve
light down jacket
extra pieces of gear
guide book.

What would you recommend?

Iv had a Petzl bug for about 3 years and have taken it up tons of pitches, both as a leader, as a follower, and even dragged it behind me in chimneys a few times, and it has been holding up great. The size sounds right for what you need, and it has a nice sleeve for a thin guidebook that your second can access by you just leaning forward, rather than taking the bag off. Outdoorgearlab has lots of other options too: outdoorgearlab.com/Climbing…

My ultimate Fav is the deuter Speed Lite 10, for many reasons. You could get the 15 or 20 if you wanted more space, but the 10 is just enough room for my size 9 approach shoes, Arc'teryx nuclei, hydration bladder, bars/snacks, sunnys.

Carried the 18L REI pack up lots of pitches. Lighter than the bug or the bullet but probably not as durable? I use it around the city a lot too and after three years of pretty heavy use it doesn't have any major issues, but the fabric is thin. Of course as soon as I say "there aren't any rips" I'm sure I'll rip it on the train today.

Take "your" stuff and find out what volume pack you need and start there. Like you I'm a bigger guy and I couldn't get pretty much the same list you posted into a "Bug". Volume first - that will narrow your choices down quickly and make the process easier maybe.

Black diamond magnum is a nice size.

I make a bag that ranges from 10 to 30L. So you can fit your harness, rack, 3L bladder, food, jacket, and what not for hiking to the base of the climb then compress it down to what ever size you need for carrying things that don't go on your harness while you climb. I designed it specifically for multi-pitch climbing.

Has anyone used the Mountain Hardware Hueco 20?

This reminds me of buying a rope - there are so many good choices that you can be overwhelmed and indecisive. Just pull the trigger and buy one. You really can't go wrong with any of the recommendations here.

I like my BD axis 33. I've got several packs that I don't climb with anymore. I'm weird with certain aspects of a pack and climbing. This is the only pack I have that doesn't push my helmet down over my face when I reach for holds or place an axe. Plus, the active suspension is pretty cool, as you reach the shoulder straps and hip belt move with you.

Light and fast is lost on me. I pack a lot of shit in that pack. It has a removable "crampon pocket" that I stuff my shoes in, a helmet cover on the top and a strap to secure rope to the top of the pack. I've packed a big puffy in it with ice gear, etc. as well.

my 2 cents

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
