Best Sandstone in the US?

No question about it. New River Gorge, WVA.

RRG is sandstone, just not as hard of a sandstone as the Nuttal at NRG. I would strongly disagree about RRG being a better area to climb then WVA, but that argument has been fought for years, from MP to the basketball court. NRG has possibly the best rock period anywhere, the climbs are varied, the location beautiful, the weather really not that bad, especially in the fall, only knock would be length of routes.

The Red is also sandstone. Both the new and red are the best, in my experience. Rock quality in terms of durability and gear goes to the new, but the wild features and unrelenting steepness at the red more than makes up for the lower quality (albeit still very solid) stone.

NRG...if I had to climb at one place the rest of my life, it would probably be the New (at least of the places I have climbed).

I've only climbed in the Red River Gorge, not the New. The Red is mighty good.

I also realized recently that the rock in Eldorado Canyon and the Flatirons was heated at some point by I'm guessing the igneous intrusions of the granite nearby. This made it super hard. The same Fountain sandstone formation is exposed further south in places like Garden of the Gods where it can be quite crappy and loose. There was a little pocket of this hardened sandstone in CO Springs at one time called Table Mountain. It is now long gone.

Indian Creek

Varies soo much on what you like. I love the Corbin sandstone of the RRG.,,but also the smooth sandy splitters out west at Indian Creek. The silky feeling of fie grained sand of Eldorado Springs is also a favorite,,or the Coconino sandstone found in uncharted layers and miles within the Grand Canyon. It's the touch, feel of some stone that makes them exciting,,not just the quality or number of routes , famous ones, or other popularity things. I'm totally into just the rock, the look and feel of some rocks is very nice..others are just awful.

People who know me aren't going to understand. The new is great. I climbed there as much as I could for about 10 summers and falls. The rock is beautiful, hard, and has every feature you could want. But.... the red kicks it's ass in fun value.

I have climbed red rock, red river, and new. As far as the views red rock is what I like because everything is high and you got great views. Red river has a ton of stuff all over the place with good variety of climbing but it is all single pitch and you will never get an amazing view. I have not been to a wide variety of areas at the new but it would be my least favorite from where i have been compared to the other 2.

It may not be the hardest or the most featured, but Wingate is the most beautiful by a long shot.

I've climbed at every place so far mentioned(except for the grand canyon rock mentioned by woodchuck)and many other sandstone areas but my favorite is the flat irons. don't really know why, they just keep drawing me back.
