BlueWater Icon 9.1mm?

I have a 9.4mm Dominator and I love it. But they dont make it anymore so I am looking for a replacement. I was more interested in something in the 9.4mm range, but the price on the 9.1mm Icon is low, and I like low prices. So, any idea on how it holds up for hard sport climbing? How does it wear?

I am really interested in knowing why both the 9.4mm Dominator and 9.1mm Icon are rated for 55g/m. It seems to imply they might be similar diameters, despite the rated differences.

I'm not a hard climber or an expert or anything but I have a 70m Icon and have used a friends Dominator a bunch. I've only fallen on my Icon once. I am 265 so maybe that's like a dozen falls if I was 180?? Haha. I'm too fat to sport climb with a 9.1mm but have used my Icon at least 100 days by now for ice and trad. Most of the friends I climb with are awesome at all types of climbing. When I get lucky to tag along with them they always ask to bring the Icon. My Icon looks and feels pretty much brand new even though I've kicked it a couple times with my pons on, climbed in the rain and mud plus it's two years old.

The only thing I would say is the dry coating makes it slicker than other ropes to handle. The good part is the dry coating hasn't even started wearing off. I had a Mammut rope that became a sponge after maybe 30 days..

The ropes weigh the same because the sheath on the Icon is burly thick. It's what makes it wear so well.

Hope some of this helps!

Check out the 9.3 wave. Great rope!

I have been looking at that one, but it's $100 more and it mostly seems to be just because they have some special 4 over 4 weaving pattern. Not worth the money IMO. $169 for a 60m 9.1mm is pretty rad.

They are both great ropes and a great company. The similarities in weight are due to the sheath of the 9.1 being a little more "heavy duty" than most skinny ropes. The 60m standard is $157 on their website.

Just got an icon 70m and used it in jtree for 2 days and red rocks for 8 days. I really like the way it handles, not too soft not to stiff, feeds and locks nicely in all the belay devices I used (atc guide, grigri 2, mega jul), and had a good amount of elongation. Didn't baby it, and it's still looking nice. I'd say for anything but sport doggin' it's a great choice, though the weight savings isn't really a benefit for cragging...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
