I need a new cold weather jacket because mine is pretty much dead. I am going to wait until the spring sales are in full effect but want to start keeping an eye out pretty soon. Really it doesn't have to be SUPER warm but I would like it to be super durable and fairly light. Like most climbers I want to get my money's worth out of the jacket and have it until I rip it in half saving children from an avalanche. Wind proof is a must and the better water resistance, the happier I'll be (I'm from the PNW.) Sustainability in construction is a huge plus.
For reference this is the jacket I've had for the last few years but after patching it several times and replacing the zipper, the outer layer is peeling in several places. backpacker.com/gear/apparel…
Are you looking for something insulated? I've been using a marmot ROM. It's a softshell, durable, very wind proof and remarkably water proof. Works as a great outer layer. I wear it on almost all my climbing trips as well as around the city.
for a water resistant and very warm synthetic a patagonia DAS parka is gonna be a great choice. if you want down id go with the Rab infinity, its got a really good water resistant outer shell
