Climbing near Gillette/Casper
|
Will be working near Gillette/Casper for the month or so. Maybe this is a long shot because it's the dead of winter, but if anyone wants to climb Devil's Tower, Ten Sleep, or in SD on a sunny day (and I'm not working), let me know. I only have personal gear so no rope/rack. Maybe some of you locals can tell me if there's any bouldering around here? Or even a good trail run? Gyms? Kind of open to anything, just trying to stay in shape while I'm away from home. |

There is some bouldering on Casper Mountain, or go out around the bridge area at Fremont Canyon, no "set" bouldering routes, but lots of potential just waiting to be climbed. |
|
There is some bouldering near New Castle |

If you have a rope and a mini trax you can do a ton at Fremont on your own. |

Thanks! Will check everything out. Fremont sounds promising. |

Dyan, I'm in the Buffalo area and would be game to check out Tensleep on a warmer day. Guernsey sounds good too. I'm out of town next week and the weekend but would be game to get some climbing in the weekend after. |

I'll keep in touch, thanks. My schedule is kind of hit-or-miss and I'm never quite sure when my days off are until a day or two before it happens. Sometimes it falls on a weekend but sometimes not. In any case, I'm hoping to get out and all of these places sound good to me. |

Never been in the winter but I worked a few weeks in Casper one fall. Between time after work and weekends, I got plenty of days with just my mini-trax at freemont. |

Fremont and alcova reservoir are probably your best bet. We climb out of rapid city and its a little sketchy in the hills and devils tower this time of year. Probably the same for ten sleep. Kurt Gowdy is supposed to be great in the winter but its a long drive from Casper farther from Gillette. Fremont is close, huge and can be 70degrees in the middle of winter when the wind is right. There is a great climbing gym/store in Casper that sells a guide book. In the winter the rocks around the reservoir are sunny and warm. The canyon itself stays pretty cold. |

It's less than 10 miles from Vedauwoo, I can't imagine it's any warmer. Vedauwoo has climbable days in the winter, I'm sure today is one of them. It's worth it if you live in Laramie or Cheyenne. Otherwise, it's a pretty long drive to maybe freeze. |
