Climbing near Gillette/Casper

Will be working near Gillette/Casper for the month or so. Maybe this is a long shot because it's the dead of winter, but if anyone wants to climb Devil's Tower, Ten Sleep, or in SD on a sunny day (and I'm not working), let me know. I only have personal gear so no rope/rack. Maybe some of you locals can tell me if there's any bouldering around here? Or even a good trail run? Gyms? Kind of open to anything, just trying to stay in shape while I'm away from home.

There is some bouldering on Casper Mountain, or go out around the bridge area at Fremont Canyon, no "set" bouldering routes, but lots of potential just waiting to be climbed.

There is some bouldering near New Castle

There is also a guide for it. No idea where to find it.

If you have a rope and a mini trax you can do a ton at Fremont on your own.

Thanks! Will check everything out. Fremont sounds promising.

Dyan,

The warmest climbing place this time of year in WY by historical records is Guernsey State Park. It was 70F on Tuesday for some 4 hrs. The 2 warmest sport climbing walls there are the Hot Cinnamon Wall and the Red Cloves Wall.

We have already had about a week of days there that were sunny and temps > 45F. We go frequently and sometimes might mesh with your schedule.

Dyan, I'm in the Buffalo area and would be game to check out Tensleep on a warmer day. Guernsey sounds good too. I'm out of town next week and the weekend but would be game to get some climbing in the weekend after.

I'll keep in touch, thanks. My schedule is kind of hit-or-miss and I'm never quite sure when my days off are until a day or two before it happens. Sometimes it falls on a weekend but sometimes not. In any case, I'm hoping to get out and all of these places sound good to me.

Never been in the winter but I worked a few weeks in Casper one fall. Between time after work and weekends, I got plenty of days with just my mini-trax at freemont.

If you're efficient and it's sunny, I think you could climb fast enough / enough routes to stay warmish.

Would almost certainly be too cold for climbing with a partner.

Aiding used to be a thing in the canyon, you could do that with gloves on.

Fremont and alcova reservoir are probably your best bet. We climb out of rapid city and its a little sketchy in the hills and devils tower this time of year. Probably the same for ten sleep. Kurt Gowdy is supposed to be great in the winter but its a long drive from Casper farther from Gillette. Fremont is close, huge and can be 70degrees in the middle of winter when the wind is right. There is a great climbing gym/store in Casper that sells a guide book. In the winter the rocks around the reservoir are sunny and warm. The canyon itself stays pretty cold.

Kurt Gowdy? Are you meaning vedauwoo? I've never seen anything climbable in Kurt Gowdy.

There is some development there. Not much. I've only heard of it, never been. It's less than 10 miles from Vedauwoo, I can't imagine it's any warmer.

Vedauwoo has climbable days in the winter, I'm sure today is one of them. It's worth it if you live in Laramie or Cheyenne. Otherwise, it's a pretty long drive to maybe freeze.
