i was driving on 74 today from rumbling bald to Asheville. As i was pulling into Gerton i saw some ice up to the left. There were some small patches of sketchy looking ice but there was one big piece that looked like it got pretty thick. Does anyone know anything about this or if there is any access to it? At one angle it looked like it was in the WI2-WI3 range but there may be more stuff up there!
Yes, those lines have been climbed before. There is also bolted rock climbing up there as well. As I recall, you take a dirt road (past a campground...?) to its terminus below the crag and follow a climber's trail up to the base of the cliff and then pick your line. Try asking over at the facebook ice page, too: facebook.com/SEICECONDITIONS

I believe legal access is parking at the old chimney, and walk across the street. Check in with the community there (Laughing Waters)as you have to walk through their development. They are allowing public hiking up there as well from what I've heard but again, check with them.
